Yes, thanks for posting. I live right next to Target, so shop there all the time. I usually use a Target Red Card debit card (tied to my bank account), but my wife uses her debit card. We'll keep an eye out.

I used to love shopping at Target, but the grouch doesn't like going there any more. If they were a super Target (with groceries) we would. I lost interest in them when the store here stopped carrying Playmobil toys. We haven't been in a few years.

Many jobs, your bank, the big companies, and your city, state and federal governments keep your information stored electronically and transact business with other institutions electronically.

Unfortunately that means that you could do everything right, but still lose your most private data if it is stolen from them. Vigilance is the key.

Yes I know that but this was simple hacked terminals which is why around here I think I will go back to cash. Hopefully this will make other stores vigilant in watching for hacked terminals before opening each day. It happen to Schnucks in St Louis which is a huge grocery chain down there and now it happen to Target which is a huge chain all over the U.S.

The way I see it if you find something vulnerable you don't just keep using it and hope for the best. You wait till it's secure again. We knew around here at Gas Stations and ATM to jiggle the card swipe to make sure it isn't fake but how do you check for something like this? You can't.

Security experts say that it was not a simple hack, but a relatively sophisticated one.

Oh did they finally release how it was done? I thought Target was holding on to that info and not letting anyone know anything.

No, they have not. But Target has thousands of registers in the US and it's unlikely to me that they would get 40 million credit card numbers just from various registers. That big number says database hack to me.

Reading the article below and there is a subtle suggestion that the problems occurred during processing. Not at the registers, but at the point where Target aggregated the transactions from the registers and transferred them to the banks or credit card companies.

Quote:
Security experts say the Target hack is a reminder of security problems facing many retailers that won’t easily go away: There are weaknesses in the way payment information travels between retailers and banks.
Quote:
When shoppers pay for store purchases with credit cards, their payment data moves from the store’s terminal through the retailer’s network to the acquiring bank and credit card issuer. “At every hop it could be vulnerable,” said Mr. Kocher. “There have been attacks at every stop along the way.”

The article says every Fortune 500 company is under similar attack and part of the problem is that the US is the only major country still using the magnetic strip cards, a payment technology from the 1960s.

Yeah agree it was a network hack not the actually terminal as I said it previous posts the company that handles the swipes is the one that was hacked. No one has talk about who that is though. Does Target have their own. It seems that may be the case.

From what I read It did not happen at processing. It happen at swiping which are two different authorizations. You swipe once to enter the system then at the end you hit okay for the transaction to be approved which goes to a different company. If it happen at processing then it would be the credit card processor fault not Target and this has happen many times with different processors being hacked over the years. This is a new kind of hack it happen in St Louis a few months back at the Schnucks store which is a major local chain there. I am from St Louis so I am familiar with the grocery store. So somehow the terminals are being hacked so even if a transaction is never authorized to the end the minute you swipe the card the info is stolen. Pretty scary stuff.

I don't have a link, but I heard on the news that it was most likely a software hack that was pushed to the card readers and impacted almost every Target store in the nation. Or they could all just be speculating until something official is released. Who knows.

Yeah that's what I heard too. It is pure speculation even Target supposedly doesn't know yet. However if they don't know how then how did they stop it? It's suppose to be safe to shop there now.

It affected all stores the reasons they say almost is because they've been able to track cards from that many stores on the black market.

Here's the letter Target is sending out...

Quote:
Dear Target Guest,
As you have likely heard by now, Target experienced unauthorized access to payment card data from U.S. Target stores. We take this crime seriously. It was a crime against Target, our team members and most importantly you - our valued guest.
We understand that a situation like this creates stress and anxiety about the safety of your payment card data at Target. Our brand has been built on a 50-year foundation of trust with our guests, and we want to assure you that the cause of this issue has been addressed and you can shop with confidence at Target.
  • We want you to know a few important things:
  • The unauthorized access took place in U.S. Target stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013. Canadian stores and target.com were not affected.
  • Even if you shopped at Target during this time frame, it doesn’t mean you are a victim of fraud. In fact, in other similar situations, there are typically low levels of actual fraud.
  • There is no indication that PIN numbers have been compromised on affected bank issued PIN debit cards or Target debit cards. Someone cannot visit an ATM with a fraudulent debit card and withdraw cash.
  • You will not be responsible for fraudulent charges – either your bank or Target have that responsibility.
  • We’re working as fast as we can to get you the information you need. Our guests are always the first priority.
  • For extra assurance, we will offer free credit monitoring services for everyone impacted. We’ll be in touch with you soon on how and where to access the service.
Please read the full notice below. And over the coming days and weeks we will be relying on corporate.target.com and our various social channels to answer questions and keep you up to date.
Thank you for your patience, understanding and loyalty to Target!

Wow did they change their tune real fast! We were told we have to pay for our own monitor service. They were not nice at all when I spoke to them. I have two friends that were treated the same I just found out one had $1600 charge at Target yesterday. It's going to take them two weeks or more to get the money back. They had to postpone Christmas till then. Target is doing nothing to help.

The other is a Red card holder and I helped her get through to cancel her card.

This is such a mess! Target is expecting the banks and credit card companies to fix everything.

This is the blogger who broke the story. I so wished I had to seem this on the 13th! I suggest those who just reading or watch the news about Target read this so you understand why so many customers are angry with how Target has been handling this.

And now let's not clutter up Monkey's thread anymore this probably needs a thread of it's own but seeing it's not really MR relevant but I am available by PM if you need more info. I have been following this closely seeing I shopped there last weekend and I'm also monitoring the Facebook page as well.

Thank you Monkey for letting us Hijack your thread. We now return you to regularly schedule Holidays Sales news.
