O gesh! I had never heard of this series. I now have it downloaded and added to my TBR list. I used to say I needed to live to 150 to read all the books I wanted to read. I think that must be closer to 200 years now! Here's hoping for some major medical breakthroughs soon!

Free today on Amazon - Dying to Know by Alison Joseph
A man’s body washes up on the beach.
It looks as if he threw himself from a lighthouse - but was it suicide, or something more sinister?
Detective Inspector Berenice Killick is used to dealing with minor complaints like parking tickets and lost property, so when she is offered the case she jumps at the chance.
She soon discovers that the dead man was Murdo Macguire, a physicist, and that he and his colleagues were carrying out top secret work on particle collisions.
When more of the scientists are found dead, in the same place and manner as Macguire, it looks like someone has a vendetta against the project.
But what were the scientists working on?
And will someone kill to find out - or to prevent the science being revealed?
As she delves deeper into the mystery, Berenice must fight to get her voice heard in a police department run by men - and she must learn to trust her instincts if she is to have any chance of solving the case.
What is it that the murderer is Dying to Know?
Berenice must find out before it is too late...

Free Today on Amazon -Where the Devil Can't Go by Anya Lipska
'THE FIRST KISZKA AND KERSHAW MYSTERY

A naked girl has washed up on the banks of the River Thames. The only clue to her identity is a heart-shaped tattoo encircling two foreign names. Who is she – and why did she die?

Life’s already complicated enough for Janusz Kiszka, unofficial 'fixer' for East London’s Polish community: his priest has asked him to track down a young waitress who has gone missing; a builder on the Olympics site owes him a pile of money; and he’s falling for married Kasia, Soho’s most strait-laced stripper. But when Janusz finds himself accused of murder by an ambitious young detective, Natalie Kershaw, and pursued by drug dealing gang members, he is forced to take an unscheduled trip back to Poland to find the real killer.

In the mist-wreathed streets of his hometown of Gdansk, Janusz must confront painful memories from the Soviet past if he is to uncover the conspiracy – and with it, a decades-old betrayal.'

Thank you - I've enjoyed the excellent BBC Radio adaptations of these books, but haven't read any. A bargain at that price.

EDIT: The entire series of 10 books is available at 99p per book, so this is a great opportunity to get the complete series for not that much more than the normal price of one book.

It's really tempting but while I quite enjoyed the first in the series, didn't enjoy the next two quite so much, I've got the 4th in the series but not read it yet (compromise, I've skipped a couple and bought four of the six I haven't got, ta much for highlighting this Mort1997).... now if it was Mankell's Wallender seriers, I'd snap the rest of them up in an instant!

Finally decided to give up on the old Julie Smith thread from July of 2012 and put her freebies here, with other mysteries.

Free right now (7 pm US Pacific time, 12/16) is Sourdough Wars, the second in Smith's Rebecca Schwartz series.

Quote:
The SECOND book in Edgar-winning author Julie Smith’s Rebecca Schwartz series.

"…a brisk and breezy item, which—like sourdough itself—has its own distinctive and satisfying flavor.” -San Diego Union

“…an awful lot of fun, and it will make you unbearably hungry for fresh-baked bread.” -San Jose Mercury-News

A tasty treat of a San Francisco mystery—a crisp, tangy story you’re sure to get a rise out of.

To you, it’s just a frozen lump of dough; but to some, it’s life and death…

Especially to handsome Peter Martinelli, who wants to auction off the fabled sourdough starter from his family’s famous bakery. But who’d buy a frozen hunk of flour and water? Only, it turns out, every bakery in San Francisco, a national food conglomerate, and an upstart ringer with a mysterious backer.

Someone would even kill for it. And does.

Enter lawyer sleuth Rebecca Schwartz, whose client is her own partner, glamorous Chris Nicholson, Martinelli’s main squeeze before the ill-starred auction.

Rebecca noshes her way through the case in hilariously unorthodox style, tasting some great bread along the way, but also uncovering so many ancient jealousies, long-simmering feuds, and seething resentments that she barely escapes death by doughball.

NOTE: THIS STORY IS COMPLETELY REALITY-BASED! A SAN FRANCISCO BAKERY MADE PAGE ONE NEWS BY FREEZING THEIR STARTER --ONLY WITHOUT THE BLOODSHED.

The slapstick style, over-the-top action, and witty dialogue make Rebecca Schwartz an easy choice for fans of Janet Evanovich, Stephanie Bond, Dorothy Cannell, Elizabeth Peters, Sarah Strohmeyer, and Jennifer Crusie.

Free Today on Amazon-The Point of Death by Peter Tonkin

'London, 1594.
The opening night of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
But it is not just the young lovers in the play who are star-crossed.
Mercutio is found murdered in the middle of the play - but it is real, not stage, blood that flows from his body.
Tom Musgrove, is hired by the theatre owners to solve the murder case as quickly and quietly as possible.
The theatre has only just reopened after two years of plagues, and they can’t afford a scandal on their doorstep.
As Tom plunges into the mean streets of Elizabethan London he soon realises he has jumped blindly into a web of murderous intrigue, which has already claimed the lives of Kit Marlowe and Francis Walsingham.
As the shattered remnants of England’s first Secret Service split into two lethally opposed camps, the blood begins to flow from the stinking sewers of Southwark to the gilded halls of Westminster.
Can Musgrove track down the murderer and solve the mystery?
Or will he end up being the one hunted to The Point of Death? '

Free Today on Amazon - Search by Matt Lynn
'Paul Turner was the greatest mathematician of his generation.
But he was also severely autistic. For 20 years, he hardly left his basement flat in Cambridge.
So why has he left £20 million pounds in his will to Luke Turner, a much younger half-brother he never even met?
Luke Turner is determined to search for the answer.
His half-brother supposedly died of a heart attack.
So why was the body cremated against his wishes?
Where did the money come from?
And why had Paul started making mysterious trips to London in the days before he died - despite his fear of crowds and big cities?
As Luke starts to investigate his half-brother's life - and death - his every move is being watched.
Can Luke find out what Paul discovered in the days before he died? Or is he about to be destroyed by the same terrifying forces that took Paul's life?

The 'Search' has begun...and for Luke Tuner there will be no hiding place.
