Amazon's intentions are actually clear, you getting or buying books from them. Any deviation of that may break whatever customized experience you may have now. Kind of reminds me previous Nooks, when people start complaining that B&N patches broke their readers! after installing custom ROMs.

I also had some "ghost collections" from previous Kindle devices. I just deleted those once and that fixed the issue. They no longer appear on my newer Kindles.

I've read the other thread and the people that are complaining are basically because one of these two reasons, or both :

-They shared same Kindle account
-They side load content and barely use or buy Amazon books

Which again, valid concerns but maybe they should stay away of Kindles altogether and get a more "international" type of reader, like a Sony or Kobo.
Actually if I may jump into the middle of this conversation the situation is directly related to kindle and how Amazon has the new update programmed. I use Calibre to sideload my books also, but 98-99% of my books are purchased either through Amazon or through my library which is connected to my MYK page on Amazon. All these books are recognized in Amazon as their books, and like booklover6 I do not turn my wifi on. The only time it is on is when I really want a book that isn't on my device and I need to get it from the Cloud, which is practically never. However if I want to make collection changes, which is at least once a week but most times every few days. With this new date, I am constantly getting the "nag" to connect/ignore. Which is VERY inconvenient and a major PITA. I do not understand why Amazon is now trying to force users to constantly keep their wifi on, especially when they add that blurb about the battery not needing a charge as often if the wifi is left off.

I also do not like that I can no longer import collections from kindle for pc, but that is a beast of another day.

Why is it so terrible to keep WiFi on when using the device? I don't get it.

When I am away from home and am not using WiFi at all, I have never noticed any messages to connect to WiFi. Perhaps, you have a setting wrong.

On the other hand, when not using WiFi, I keep Airplane mode on. Maybe you should use Airplane mode.
Personally I keep my wifi off because I like to prolong the times when I have to charge it, giving me more reading time per charge. I usually only plug in my device once a month or more. I read A LOT on my device, so I do not want the wifi which I rarely use to drain my battery.

I do the same thing. I always keep wifi/3G off unless I'm downloading a book.

Unfortunately, you would have to do just that to get a truly seamless user experience even as a sirmarustomer (new word that means someone who buys 10 books and assumes he is typical of all readers).

And somehow, Amazon managed to make a Kindle Basic, Touch, AND PW1 which work just fine with sideloaded content, so why break it now?

They don't have to support any third-party apps whatsoever, just freaking make sure that non-amazon books don't BREAK THE @!#&%ING READER!!!!

At this point, why do they bother to allow sideloading at all?
What do you mean by broken? Other than my sideloaded books that are in collections not being saved when I deregister/reregister the device from my account I am not having any trouble with them.

Same here. I don't like always-on connectivity on devices that don't need it. On the KPW1, it just drains the battery without providing any benefit during reading. (I don't do highlights, or lookups in Wikipedia and so on. The dictionary is more than enough for the occasional word I don't know.)

I also sideload books--keep wifi off most of the time, so firmware hasn't updated yet. I don't anticipate any problems when/if my firmware does update. From my understanding--reading here and elsewhere--the problems crop up for folks who use collections, and the way Amazon has chosen to implement "cloud collections". I can certainly understand why this is annoying to a lot of people--doesn't seem like something the developers thought through very well.

I never turn WiFi off. I simply use Airplane mode to stop its activity.

Maybe you folks getting those nag messages should go to Airplane mode. I never get any of those messages.

Battery drain does not seem to be affected since I get 9 days on my HDX 2013 and 18 days on my PW 2013 before needing a recharge.

It is. You turn WiFi off by turning on Airplane mode. Amazon changed the wording because people were being force to turn off their Kindles during take off. The K3 still says WiFi it has no airplane mode.

I think part of the problem is what you choose in the dropdown when you buy the book at Amazon. It defaults to "send to your xyz (main) device". If you want to download and load them only when you want them, you have to choose the option to download via the computer to keep it from automatically trying to push it down when you turn on the WiFi.

It would be nice if you could make "download via USB" as the first choice, but I haven't seen an option for that anywhere.

I had to remove both the Nook and Kindle apps from my phone because they both seemed to want to download every flippin' ebook I have. The phone definitely doesn't have the memory for that!

Send it to Cloud Reader (even if you never use it after setting it up one time).

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there also an issue that if you sideload books that are not purchased from Amazon, when you add it to a collection it will give you an added message about the book not being in the cloud?
