I'm reading The Widow File by S.G. Redling.

It is a Amazon First, book that is free to prime members.

Pretty good pacing in the book but some annoying issues with spending a lot of time on where the main character hides money which seems to have little to do with the plot. Also, the author just seems to be trying too hard to hammer home certain personality traits of characters.

I'm about 60% through it and at this point I'd probably give it 3 stars of 5.

Because of you, I had to buy the first one in the series

You're in for a treat. It's an excellent series that mostly has stood the test of time. There are some things that show their age, and we clearly have a disagreement about the Susan Silverman character, but that hasn't stopped me from liking the series.

It's not meant to be read right away, but I'll let you know what I think about it.

I have always enjoyed the Spenser Series. My two favorite books in the series are #5 The Judas Goat and #12 A Catskill Eagle.

Charlie, I wonder if a lot of the disagreement has to do with the book vs the TV series character... For example, I absolutely love "Mrs. Peel" from the 'Avengers' series. (How could one not? ) Head over heels lust. Yet I feel absolutely nothing for Dianna Rigg, the very talented Shakespearean actress who plays the part. I really appreciate the TV series 'Susan' (no lust there, but I like her,) but don't particularly care for this actress in other roles.
Hmmm......

Honestly, I barely remember the TV series character. My opinion of her is based on both my reaction after reading the novels, and my wife's reactions after reading them.

(BTW, we both agree that Mrs. Peel was one of the great English characters. Diana Rigg was less interesting than the character she played. )

Finished Moonrise and Moonwar by Ben Bova. Really enjoyed it and his brilliant depiction of life on a Moonbase. His treatment of female characters are a bit iffy, but if you can get past that it's a very good read.

Well, not bad. Rather slow at the beginning, setting all that up. I almost gave up on it, but once I got through that, it certainly picked right up! Plot development - excellent. Character development? Less so, but acceptable. Actual writing? Better than most, certainly better than any freebie I've read recently. Actual eBook proofreading? Excellent.

Overall? Worth what I spent for it. Maybe even a bit more. I'll look forward to seeing how future volumes shape up.

Right now, on to Shadow of Freedom as I finish off my re-read of the Honor Harrington series.

I really enjoyed reading Blood and Circuses, it was as usual, This morning I've just begun a re-read of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone which I've been putting of way too long now.

I really enjoy the Kerry Greenwood Phryne Fisher books. I'm so glad that others are getting turned on to them as well. Her other series is also good, though not nearly as compelling. It's just really hard to top Phryne as a character!

Have you had a chance to see the Australian Broadcast Company (ABC) productions? We've been getting them here in Canada for a while now, with the current second season running right now on The Knowledge Network. Essie Davis portrays Phryne, and she is absolutely perfect in the role.

I've also been considering a reread of Harry Potter, but I think I'll do it with the audio books. I have both the Stephen Fry and the Jim Dale versions, and both are excellent, but I think I'll go with the Stephen Fry versions.

I've not, before now, been aware of Kerry Greenwood's other work. A few months back I rented the season one DVD's of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries and enjoyed them a lot. Will do the same when season 2 becomes available.

Ah, she has the Corinna Chapman series. Set in modern times, Ms. Chapman is a baker and solves mysteries. They're good, but not at the peak the Phryne Fisher books are. Hardly surprising, Phryne is such a great character.

Some PBS stations have been showing the Miss Fisher series. KQED had the first season on this summer, and I see that Wisconson Public Television has the first season on right now. And, of course, you can always come watch it on our Knowledge Network. You'll need to deal with the geo-restrictions, of course. I'm sure you can handle that.

I grabbed up another Amazon Freebie, Earthly Delights: Corinna Chapman #1 by Kerry Greenwood!

Yep, I've seen that picture before, I believe at Netflix! Essie is a cutie and a very good actress!
