It's understandable.

I do use the library regularly. (Exclusively in the past) I do so for two reasons. One, I've already paid for the books (print & digital) by way of taxes so I can't see myself paying twice. Second, I like to support the library's digital initiatives in hopes that they will continue offering them and possibly even expand them.

I list all my books in Goodreads for record keeping and never reread.

I've raided Kobo... I've used some 85%, 75% and 70% codes I've found in the Kobo thread. I started with the 85% one, and only stopped buying when none of the codes would work anymore.

Let's just say that the amount of books was... uh.... large. However, at an average price of about €0.98, I can afford it, and they were all on my very large fantasy wish list

These books will be a Christmas present that I have to buy for myself, because the person giving it to me doesn't have a zilch of understanding about ebooks (or computers... or the internet). Therefore I'll create a "gift card" and print it out on some nice photo paper, so that person actually has something to actually give me after Christmas dinner

The only thing I hate is that there is ONE book in all of the series that Kobo did not have, and I had to spend €4.50 at Feedbooks to be able to get it. I see that quite often, that a store is missing one book in a series o 4 or 5, while other stores also have the series, but are missing a different book.

My name is Mike and I'm and e-book addict. I own more e-books that I can probably realistically read in a life time and compound the problem by finding new books I want to read all the time.

I have this problem as well. It would take me a lifetime to read all the books I have. Yet I still buy more. I might try to stop for awhile in the new year. Yeah there's my new years resolution. Don't buy so many books!

I probably have more public domain/free stuff than books I paid for and I'm a big sales hound. I have a lot of books I paid less than $1.

I also have more ebooks that I can realistically ever read, and still I purchase more. However, like pdurrant, I have no other vices that actually cost money (does coffee count?) and I have the satisfying feeling of supporting authors and book publishers. I am in Las Vegas for a month and have absolutely no desire to support casinos, so I have no angst over my book habit.

You have to be more specific. Generalized resolutions only last about 4 days. You might get 4 or more months out of a more specific one.

When I joined this list, limiting myself to the wishlist actually was very helpful and severely limited my additional purchases until just before Thanksgiving. My 2014 resolution is to limit new purchases to what is already on my wish list, the Baen Book Bundle plus one book, per month until just before Thanksgiving. Free books will go into a separate Calibre library and get them out of my Amazon/B&N Clouds. I honestly don't think I read more than 6 of those freebees, but training myself to stop getting them hasn't worked yet. While I may only read 2-3 books out of the Baen Book Bundle every month, my sisters read them all, so they certainly get used.

Welcome to the thread!

The good news is that we don't count free books, in TBRs or as purchases. After all, if we counted public domain, authors could all stop writing, as there's enough public domain material to keep all of us in reading matter for the rest of our lives!

Sales are good, so long as you're buying ebooks that are on your wish list, and not just books that look interesting because they're on sale. That's a way to spend lots of money on a TBR that you're not actually very interested in reading.

So - read our three guidelines, (first post), and enjoy reading your TBR, while adding books to your wish list and waiting for the sales.

Providing those books were on your wish list (either explicit titles, or favourite authors), that's a good deal. But if they just looked interesting, shame on you…

Oh, what a good idea. I'm not sure I could manage that, but I might give it a go for next year's challenge. (I've failed the challenge I set myself this year of no more than 120 ebooks.)

I keep records in Calibre of every book I have read, including library books and audiobooks. I just make an entry w/o the book itself. It works great for me. If I did want to reread part of it, I would have to check it out of the library again and that wouldn't be as easy as just opening the book, but it works for me.

A good idea. I suppose I should investigate my library options more closely.

Perhaps it's that I don't want the temptation to just keep the book. Not that I would, but it's been shown that people have a limited amount of will-power. Spend it on one thing, and it's more difficult to resist the next temptation! OTOH, exercising will-power regularly does seem to increase one's capacity.
