What can I do with an HDX?

Spec wise, nexus 7 and HDX (both 2013) look nearly identical. Nexus has GPS and rear camera. I don't know if she will ever use the rear camera, but GPS is certainly handy at some point. HDX has slightly better CPU. HDX screen is highly praised for color accuracy, but I think my sister is more likely to notice and be bothered by the blue border than to care about the color gamut.

Nexus 7 is the true android experience, backed by google so you know it gets all the apps and updates. Amazon has good customer service, and it's great if you are invested in amazon ecosystem, but she is not.

PS: I'm agreeing with Blossom and others on the pw2. I feel like I spend more time fiddling with it to make it look right than reading. After a while, I feel like: why am I doing this? I think that by trying to overcome eink's shortcoming, the PW paradoxically highlights it. The old school kindle is better for day reading, and a good hi res tablet is better for night reading. The PW is sort of stuck in no man's land.

$179!! I paid $219 for mine on Amazon. That's a really good deal! If you are getting a case we have a thread in the Android part of the forum for suggestions and most are pretty inexpensive.

Just don't play with the Nexus 7 too much or you might want to keep it!

Oh that is a really good deal! I got my KFHD 16GB for $50 off on Cyber Monday! I am loving these sales Amazon is having. They never use to do sales on Kindles.

You're going to love the 8.9 I saw one when grabbing some cables the other day at BB and it looked awesome! I wanted to take it home with me. It uses White LEDs so there is no fringe. I still can't believe Amazon used Blue on the HDX I am confident next years will back to normal colors or they will figure out how to hide the light bleed. Amazon does listen to it users at first they were saying the blue is normal and no replacements allowed. Now they say we'll replace it but can't promise the new one will be any better than the last. The techs I talk to last time were aware of the issue and no longer called it normal. One person reported a tech telling him they can just keep replacing it till he is happy. You got to love Kindle Support! No other store will do that.

As for your comments on the PW2 - yes! I sent mine back, and ever since then, I have been shaking my head at myself. All that time rooting, hacking, tweaking, while fun, to get things the way I want them....no more! It's silly. Adjust a few things in Calibre, plug in my Kobo, and everything is the way I want it, no hacking, no rooting. Just reading!

At least with the PW1 I could add my own font. In most ways, it was a better device than the PW2 (to me).

So I am relieved I was able to send my PW2 back. I won't get another e-ink Kindle unless it does what I want without having to hack it to pieces. (Or unless they make a PW Mini)

I would caution anyone against getting the 2013 Nexus 7 to be used for long periods as an e-reader. The forums are overrun with complaints about the Nexus doing repeated random reboots. Can you imagine trying to read a long novel and be interrupted several times while in the middle of it? Likewise, there are numerous reports of the touch screen having issues....ghost touches and whatnot, which could definitely affect you as you're trying to turn pages in the book.

Just one technical correction, for other techno-nerds like myself who go crazy about these kinds of things: It's incorrect to say "It uses white LEDs so there is no fringe." Every expert in the field will tell you that all LCD tablets have light bleed....period. What would be correct to say is "It uses white LEDs so you won't notice the white fringe on white pages, although you may on black pages."

It hasn't ever happened with mine, but I haven't had it very long. What forum are you referring to?

No, I don't work for Amazon. Just stating a fact, all devices have warts of some sort. I understand that Blossom values the reading experience of her devices over probably any other feature and the bleed bothers her and she has a right to like or not like something. Yes, pretty well every device has something like this with it. You search the name of the device+problems and every single one will have hundreds of complaints about a particular issue. When you sell millions of devices you are probably going to find more people who have issues with a device and more devices that are defective.

I don't think it's as wide spread an issue as to warrant telling people not to buy the device. From what I've read it has to do with latest updates to android for the Nexus 7 that is causing the issue.

Fair point. Still, I can't imagine that a slight blue halo around a screen would be nearly as distracting as the machine shutting off in the middle of a paragraph....something that I believe you're in agreement with.
