Well, it involves lubricant.

This thread is my first encounter with ".99c" in the context of currency, and I've lived in several parts of Canada. I find the notation so obnoxious that I'd insist that the item is free. We don't exactly have a penny any more, so .99c clearly rounds to 0c (rather than 5c).

Library books

If you don't sign into your local library to download it then the book will go to the next person on the list.

Once you download it to your reader you have anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks to read it. It depends on what your library offers and what you've selected.

You will get free classics books or books out of copyright on many sites. Popular, current, still in copyright books have to be purchased or borrowed from the library. Anywhere offering you free books that are current/popular/newly released are what is referred to as torrent copies. [not legal]
I use our local public library all the time with the help of OverDrive . They always have good reads , not always available but the wait list usually isn't very long. We can checkout a book for either 1 week or 2 weeks.

I use three libraries' OverDrives, since I have borrowed the library cards of a few friends....

Lots of variety when you can call on all those options.

One of them only allows 1 to 2 weeks, the others allow 1 to 3 weeks.

And of course, what has a waitlist in one library doesn't usually have a waitlist in the other. When they do, though, is when it's a really popular book that has a waitlist of like 150.

The good news is that if the servicing was successful then you'll eventually have a new little car. 9 months for cattle, not sure how long it takes for cars.

After poking around the Fifth Imperium site for a while, it seems that the newer CDs are at the top of the list. Those will have files for the books in epub format (as well as MANY others). The CDs near the bottom of the list did not include epub files. Perhaps they are old enough that they pre-date the use of epub. However, if you find an older title that you would like it is possible to assemble the htm and jpg files in Sigil to make an epub. Many of those Baen titles are included on several of the CDs, so start with the newer ones and you might not need to use Sigil.

Just convert any of the format that are provided, say prf=mobi with Calibre. The multi file html is in fact the hardest.

Thanks, Little-E! I've converted a mobi file to epub. If the mobi isn't available I'll try a prf.

What takes time at Fifth Imperium is sorting out all the many titles on those CDs. It takes some research to sort out which books are part of a series, and in which order they should be read. An embarrassment of riches, truly. Baen was generous to offer these, a few years ago. And some of these books are now unavailable (except as used paperbacks). So it's very nice to be able to find them.
