ipad Mini (retina) or regular iPad?

It's not like I'm telling porkies, I'm just saying it the way it is.

And I used to have an ipad 2 until not too long ago, although that thing was insufferable - glad I got rid of it.
The problem is that your opinion is based on especulation, not facts. You simply regurgitat online reviews without even validate any of them. You disregard comments from people who actually own the device, fixated on something someone else said about a product.

I did search posts you have made on the Apple forum and most, if not all, are against Apple or users than own Apple products. So clearly, it's not mere opinion but deliberated intention of saying bad things about Apple. As a matter of fact, you currently don't own any iPad, so really I don't get why you visit Apple products then. It's like someone going to Onyx forum for a year or two just to criticize and say bad things about it. It would be different if it's coming from someone who bought it and later sold it because it was not pleased with it. So I am sorry, but we call that trolling a forum. And I'm not trying to be offensive it's just what it is. It's typical in Amazon as well coming from some users of the completion.

It's nice when people provide their opinion but when the posts are just to bash products just for the mere act of doing it, it starts to be annoying.

Three people told you that the Retina Mini does not have a poor screen, people who bought it, but you insists, citing an online review from someone that still recommends it.

I honestly don't understand the bad feeling of some against a company like Apple. Yes, the products are expensive, so what? Some people have the desire and money to buy them. We're in a free market.

And yes, I own two iPads, Retina Mini and Air. I also own a Nook HD, Kindle Touch, Kindle PW1 and Kindke PW2. I also have several Linux boxes at home (so I'm not an Apple fanboy), one Windows box and two Macs. I don't own Apple stocks, by the way, but I do own Microsoft stocks. However, I own a PS4, which is a Sony, but don't like Sony ereaders. I'm really open minded to anything that is technology related, including readers and tablets.

From a soon to be self-hating Apple owner.
Their pricing is higher than others, but I wouldn't say it was outrageous. Otherwise, how would so many people be able to buy them? And I'm not quite sure how their pricing practices border on usury???

Look, I'm expressing my opinion, just like everybody else does. I'm not calling people trolls, fanboys or jerks as others do, I simply say what I think in a civilized manner. If you don't like what I have to say, feel free to make use of the ignore feature on the forum.

I don't specifically go to the apple forum, I check the "last 24 hours" section and I read the threads that call my attention, be that news, android, apple or whatnot, and when I have something I think is worth saying, I do so.

And as others have said, not currently owning a device does not mean I have to refrain from commenting on the shortcoming on said device, especially when knowledge on such shortcomings is well publicised - I'm not telling lies.

Your opinion is that "there is no problem with the mini's screen". That's all good, but my opinion is that, when something costs significantly more than the competition, it should offer much better features, and the screen on the mini falls way short of that - 63% gamut in the tail end of 2013 is pathetic, and the fact that you have to pay top dollar for it makes it that much worse. Feel free to disagree as much as you want, but the info is out there: the screen is subpar.

The iPad is more than just a screen (also true of all tablets). Weaknesses in one area are often made up for by strengths in other areas.

True, of course. But why shouldn't people be made aware of the weaknesses so that they can make an educated decision?

What about the strengths? That's what drives the buying decision.

Buying decisions are very personal. What may be important to you doesn't matter to someone else. So it is best to present all the evidence (positive and negative) to people looking for advice. Then they can make their own decisions.

You're taking one feature and entirely dismissing a product because of it. You are adding nothing to the discussion because everyone already knows the iPad mini's screen has a narrower color gamut than the Air and other latest high-end tablets. The facts are that the iPad mini is better than most tablets in many things and slightly worse in one (2 if you include price). Show me your posts where you point out to people that the Nexus or other Android tablets have an inferior SOC, inferior GPU, slower touch response, lower app selection, fewer LTE bands, etc. to the iPad mini. But, for some reason, you seem to only find it necessary to point out deficiencies in devices you don't own that just so happen to be made by Apple

Probably shouldn't have replied, as I'm just continuing this pointless back and forth. Looks like I couldn't even take my own advice I'll try harder from now on

Exactly. When your idea of presenting all the evidence is repeatedly pointing out negatives it becomes obvious that you are biased against Apple products. There is nothing wrong with being biased -- everyone is to some extent -- but pretending that you aren't is disingenuous.

That's very true, but in this case the main weakness of this device is in the screen, something you constantly stare at and interact with, so it's unlikely to be unimportant to anybody. We could make the case for somebody who exclusively uses the device for reading books (not magazines or illustrated books or comics, as those would also be affected), but this is marketed as a multi purpose device, not a dedicated reader, so this weakness cannot be swept under the carpet as a minor thing.

Not true.

Like the reviewer himself said, he also recommends it. The alleged issue is with gamut, which again, owners who have one, barely noticed.

In the context of pure reading device, like most users here in Mobileread, it does not matter. Novels are black and white, just letters. Why you need a 100 gamut for that? Non sense.

For magazines or comics, I would never recommend the Mini or any 7 inches device. It's possible to use, but too small. 10 inches is more appropriate .

The awesome iOS app market, bigger screen than most 7 inches tablets and hardware support easily overcome that alleged gamut thing.

The only case may be a deal breaker is for those who use it in photography and on that case, the Air is probably a better device anyway. Or , if budget is a constraint .

I had a Nexus and it's too small for PDFs and browsing. It was good for ebooks though but that does not require color.
