Does epub validator work?

I am trying to validate my word document for Smashwords - saved as word 97-2003 - so it is .doc as recommended.

I can't even get it past the initial screen!

Error says: "Detected version: Could not determine version. INTERNAL ERROR

For files other than epubs, mode must be specified! Default version is 3.0."

I tried uploading a document with only the words 'test test' in - this also failed to upload!

I was taught on a course that I could upload a .doc file to this validator.

Then you should ask for your money back, because the validator can only check epub files. I.e. you'll have to upload your doc first to Smashwords and then check the ePub that it'll generate with the validator.

Thanks for trying to help but I saw it demonstrated on video - a .doc was validated - the only thing was that the video is a year old so perhaps the newest version of the validator is a prroblem?

But you did used to be able to upload a word doc for checking.

The IDPF Validator can only be used to validate ePubs. Actually, it says so on the website:

Submit an EPUB document for validation. Your file must be 10MB or less.

Maybe you're mixing this up with the SmashWords website, which used to accept only Word files. The ePub validator never validated .doc files.

Agreed. The IDPF's online epub validator (epubCheck) has never validated Word DOCs. There'd be no point. DOCs aren't epubs.
