@twobits, @gunbad, MANY THANKS!
I took the plunge and all seems to be working very fine, including pocket, and various hacks including Tweaks, Coolreader and Koreader.
One thing which seems to be broken is fmon - but I guess this is one for the developers' forum.

Hmm... so does changing all the services to duckduckgo bring up the search site at some point? Is this in a script file?

@paola
fmon still works but you need to remove and reinstall the .png, at least I had to.

Luck;
Ken

thanks Ken, we cross-edited at the same time
I reinstalled fmon, did not think of deleting and re-copying the png, anyhow all fine now!

No effect or script ...
I used duckduck just incase there needed to be an address
but twas just my kneejerk guess to cut off the dialing finger

For those unaware - browser configuration file is located ...

KOBOeReader/.kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf

service addresses are at files end

Thanks much. I have Hindenburg disabled when I am in Koreader, so it is not on that much, anyway. Duckduckgo.com claims to be a non-tracking search engine, so it would be a good choice for your purpose. I think I'll check out the search engine, sounds interesting.

Luck;

Halle-freakin-luiah! This has been annoying me for a few months now.

I just did a sync and my Aura HD updated to 3.1.0....here's hoping I don't have to fiddle with the font sizing anymore when starting a new chapter.

with the hosts file to enable connections.

Could it be kobo was phoning home to confirm an unmodified device
and (possibly unintentionally) crippling the wifi connection I wondered?

In any case enabling the connection corrected the problem.
Kobo ereaders are known to test a URL when starting the connection. If it didn't reach the URL, it reported no connection even if it had successfully connected to the WiFi. You can see this on the router as the ereader shows up as a client and had been given an IP address.

In the past, the URL was reported to be http://www.apple.com/library/test/success.html. If Kobo changed that to use their own server, that would explain the hosts file change blocking the connection. There are some suggestions for working around this in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=2377037.

But, I suspect the current crop of issues is not this. Some of the seem to be reporting not able to connect to the router a second time. I am not seeing this with my Touch or Glo at home. I do have a problem at work, but as others in the office are having similar problems with different devices and restarting the router fixes it, I think it is the router, not the device.

Device: Kobo: Not just an eReader, it's an adventure!
So I finally connected the Glo to the Kobo Desktop, and got 3.1.0 loaded.

I pressed the "What's new in 3.1.0 square", and it displayed "New in version 2.10.0"

I didn't realise how right I'd be when I entitled these last three releases as the "Back to the Future Part I, II, III" releases...

It may not be that all books are affected, but it's blatantly obvious -- the rendering under 3.1.0 looks atrocious -- with the titles I've checked from the Canadian Kobo store. Here are three that clearly demonstrate the problem; they look AWFUL under 3.1.0:

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebo...inking-clearly

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebook/social

http://store.kobobooks.com/en-CA/ebook/burning-paradise

GeoffR's JPGs, posted above, don't do justice to the mess; comparing the above books on a Mini (which is immune to the 3.1.0 upgrade) or another E Ink Kobo that hasn't yet been bumped to 3.1.0 and you'll see. (I bought these books, but I imagine the problem shows up in the free previews, too.)

It's not just chapter heads that are affected but also subheads within a chapter, epigrams, picture captions -- anything with complex formatting.

It looks TERRIBLE.
Is it just me, or does everyone else get the idea that Kobo don't actually test anything before releasing it...

3.1.0 was pushed to my Aura 6". I also manually updated my Mini and girlfriend's original Touch N905 and the poor formatting appears across the board. It's awful, just awful. I hope it's fixed soon.

I'm not having any of the WIFI issues that others seem to be experiencing though.

Also not having any USB issues with the GF's Touch as others are reporting; connects to pc/charger just fine with no reboots. To install, I did a hard reset back to stock (power off - home button + power-slider), then dumped the 4th Gen tgz and let it update to 3.1.0 before setting it up.

I agree with you , I downloaded the previews and using Kobo Nickel font it looks crappy. Which makes for a terrible reading experience and totally unfair to the author and the reader. I hope they offer up a fast fix for this, but I am not holding any faith in the fast part.

Well my kobo aura updated on friday to 3.1.0. Seemed to work great finished a book and put it to sleep. Last night wouldn't turn on and is stuck on sleep screen. No amount of paperclip resetting will change this. Contacted kobo who have asked for pictures of reader and will get back to me. Pity as i love the aura but if it has gone wrong after 90 days that not good. Also if it has to be sent away could be weeks before i get it back. I have tried various hard reset suggestions using buttons etc on here but wonder if anyone has had problems and found a solution.
Having come from sony with solid but outdated readers to kobo with great reader but many problems i suppose i may have to cave in and go to Kindle if this can't be fixed easily

forgive me if this seems too obvious, but are you sure your device is charged? Have you tried to plug it into a computer?

I have had similar occurrences with my Aura HD but not for as long. Usually it recovers overnight. If you have a SD card on it take it out, as sometimes this helps, but probably you know this. Otherwise I would poke it a bit more, hold the slider switch on and push the light switch etc. and/or let it discharge.

No fun with a new reader
