Blossom, go to the app store and download Classic Start 8. I tried it, and it is wonderful. gives you full Windows 7 start button access.

I try to stay away from app store. I finally figure out how to get a local account yesterday after the 8.1 update so I am over the moon. I am using Classic Shell and I love it. It gave me back my Start menu. It looks just like Win 7 and Vista's version and works great. I also found a way to get my Quick Launch back as it's still in Win 8.1 you just got to know how to add it. Microsoft wants us jumping through hoops but I got my show desktop and switch windows buttons that were missing. I'm very happy with my desktop on my laptop now. There's also option in 8.1 that let's you boot straight to desktop. Now I can start installing programs.

That's because you got big tablets! I love reading on my 7" tablets. I am reading The Cop who stole Christmas by Christie Craig. She is my top favorite author next to JE. She is soo funny!

Moon+ is awesome for reading with Calibre companion. I am using Mantano less and less now.

Maybe that is it, but I gave my husband my 8.9" Fire HD (he had my 7" original Fire) and that is all he uses. Except he complained the other day that he had to charge it too often. I left my original PW where he could see it, but he passed. For someone who works for a software company, you would think he would be more interested in gadgets, but just getting him to set up Wi-Fi involves a lot of swearing.

Blossom, I mean the Microsoft App store (you probably did, too). I download a lot from there, mostly free. They are guaranteed to work with Windows 8, and I have never had any problems with any of them.

Right you have to be logged into a Microsoft account to use apps. While I do this on mobile devices I refuse to do this on a computer so I yesterday I googled and found a way to switch to a local account which is just like the ones on Vista or Windows 7. I have no intention of using apps I only need my Desktop area.

Classic Shell was made just for Windows 8 It's awesome. Doesn't seem to be a resource hog either like some add ons can be.

I'm using it on Windows 7 to get back some of the XP functionality. So it's been around a little longer than 8, but I have heard it's really made a difference for those "stuck with" 8 and wanting it to look more like 7.

What XP feature isn't in 7? Vista has everything the add on has.

Why would you want to pollute Windows 7 with anything from XP?

It's been awhile, but it had mostly to do with the way Windows Explorer worked. I don't like the little arrows on the folders, so made it look more like XP. And I got the toolbar buttons for things like copy, paste delete, up, refresh back. I still wish I could get rid of that very fat unused spaced at the bottom of Window Explorer, but was never able to find a setting to turn that off.

I think it also gave me a little functionality on the Start Menu back, but I can't think what at the moment.
