99c could be 99 times the the speed of light. Now, 99¢ clearly specifies money, but who is gonna remember how to type that? (On a Mac, on a US keyboard, option-4)

I posted on one of Kobobooks discussions and asked about that link that led to ... books that weren't free but is labeled free books:

Thanks, Maria – we actually found a bug that is preventing some of the free books lists that we have put together and are working to get that resolved –

Eh, the OP hasn't been online since her post. Wanted a rant and not help, apparently.

But there are excellent suggestions and links in this thread and I'm quite sure others will find them very useful.

You mean an apostrophe, don't you? You've also mentioned a few of the most commonly confused words in English. My pet peeve is when people misuse words that aren't commonly confused-like 'serviced' rather than 'served'. Having been raised on a farm I *know* what 'serviced' means & while there are a few organizations that do 'service' their customers IMO I doubt if any of them actually want to boast about it.

I like manybooks.net for Project Gutenberg books. Personal preference as the books are the same but I think it's better organized. (Note that the link does *not* start with www-but I just checked & they do have an alias (www.manybooks.net) that redirects to the correct site.)

I was just reading an indie novel that kept describing the action of putting an arrow to a bow as "notching" the arrow. I felt a little shiver in my spine each time.

I read a lot. I took archery. I still didn't know until you posted this that it was nock an arrow. I've seen it notch an arrow too many times (and not in indie books). That is not to excuse my ignorance, but rather say thanks because I can one day see myself writing a book and having a character need to load an arrow. Also in my defense I took archery in Japan. No one ever said "notch" or "nock" the arrows...

According to Wikipedia, they are both correct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow

Quote:
Nocks

The nock is a notch in the rearmost end of the arrow. It serves to keep the arrow in place on the string as the bow is being drawn. Nocks may be simple slots cut in the back of the arrow, or separate pieces made from wood, plastic, or horn that are then attached to the end of the arrow.[16] Modern nocks, and traditional Turkish nocks, are often constructed so as to curve around the string or even pinch it slightly, so that the arrow is unlikely to slip off.[17] In English it is common to say "nock an arrow" or "notch an arrow," when one readies a shot.
So, when notching or nocking an arrow, you put the notch of the nock onto the string.

(That last sentence really feels made up, although it seems to be quite correct )

I've never heard an archer say "notch", but if Wikipedia's right, I guess I shouldn't be a snob about it. I still don't like it, though, and if you'll excuse me, I think there are kids on my lawn.

Therefore, I said "According to Wikipedia". I wouldn't trust it blindly.

However, I read a lot of fantasy (so, there's quite a lot o bow and arrow stuff in there), and I've actually seen "notch an arrow" *far* more often than "nock an arrow". I have actually wondered if this was a difference between American and British English, or some other sort of weirdness.

I've seen it a lot too. But to be on the safe side, I'll just have all my characters use guns, light sabers, daggers and swords! Or if they shoot arrows maybe I can skip that whole loading sequence...
