Yes, I know it's the name of the Apple connector, but the previous poster claimed it was going to be the name of the USB connector. This seems a little improbable (there would almost certainly be trademark issues), so I was asking where he got that information from.

Both ends of the cable will be the same too. It won't matter which end goes into the PC and which end goes into the device.

Obviously lots of changes will be needed, and lots of cables will be made obsolete. But this will be a very good change.

I think that's great, but it will make for a lot of potential headaches for those of us with multiple older devices. Adapters should ease that pain, however.

For what it's worth, I love using Apple's new Lightning connector. It's great not having to worry about whether I'm plugging in the cord properly each time. It would be even better if Apple were adopt this new USB standard so one cord would rule all worlds, but we all know that will never happen.

The time will come when Apple and everyone else will be forced to accept at least one end of the cable changing to meet the new standard.

I like the Lightning connector a lot too. However I feel the grip area is almost too petite - whenever I'm unplugging it I feel like I might be crushing it.

I don't see why that would ever be a problem with the existing cables. The correct way is with the USB symbol facing upward. It is one of those things that you can do with your eyes closed.

This is very welcome. I think the current USB 3.0 standard is very weak due to the abnormal width to height ratio of the plug, making connections unstable. If you look at user reviews of USB 3.0 HDD enclosures and external hard drives, there are a lot of complaints about the connections coming loose and not holding, which can be disastrous during data transfer. I don't mind paying extra in the future if it means better, more stable connections.
