Forget the price of a new battery plus the price of your labor and then possibly disappointment. Just buy a new PW 2013. They are great !!

I've had my paperwhite 1st gen ever since it was launched. The unit still looks great and the lighting is still in great shape. I use my Kindle a couple of times a week. I used to be much more of an avid reader, but as of late have found myself with less spare time for one of my favorite activities.

I do hope to get another few years out of the light on this before I have to replace this unit.

I'm pretty sure the battery is not to blame. They will almost certainly use a charge pump design for the LEDs. It is however quite normal that LEDs degrade over time. All do, but in how much there's a wide variance. They also might change their color a bit.

That said, given how long the device is on the market, I estimate a maximum usage time of ~5000 hours. That isn't very much for LEDs.

Not wanting to sound accusing, but there's also a psychological factor to consider. Who isn't sitting in front of a device right now that seemingly got a bit slower each day compared to when it was new? ... (Yes there are reasons why that might in fact be the case, but often enough, it's just perception)

LEDs are typically quoted as having a lifetime of around 25000-50000h. It's not as simple as it may seem, though, because LEDs very rarely die, they simply fade. The quoted lifetime is generally the point at which the light has an output of 70% of its original value; 70% is a pretty arbitrary value which is deemed to be the point at which you'll notice that it's not quite as bright as it once was.

So if an LED has a lifespan of 25000h, and you use your reader for 2h a day, that means you may notice a lessening of the brightness after 25000/2 = 12500 days, or about 34 years.

ie it's not likely to be a problem with an eInk reader .
