My latest read was Zenn Scarlett by Christian Schoon - YA scifi about a girl studying to be an exoveterinarian (vet specialising in alien animals) on Mars. This was another book I got as part of my Strange Chemistry yearly subscription (which is now over).
The premise was better than the book, really, which was somewhat dull, repetitive and a little preachy for the first three quarters; it did pick up enough in the last quarter (and ended on something of a cliffhanger) that I'm semi-considering perhaps reading the next book as well once it's out next year. |

Next I read another of my Agatha Christie books. They Came To Baghdad is an enjoyable spy mystery. Although infinitely better than "The Big Four", it also has the idea of a sinister world-wide conspirach, which made it just less than ideal for me. And now I'm onto the latest in Elizabeth Moon's Paksenarrion Legacy series, Limits of Power, which apparently came out in June, but that I didn't notice until yesterday. |

There was a discussion about Doris Lessing last month on her death and what would be a good first choice for those who had never read any of her books, that group including myself. I recently read The Grass is Singing and can highly recommend it. It worked for me just as a study of relationships among the characters, but also as an examination of the racial views in South Africa at the time the book was set. That to fit into white society no white dare question the assumption that any white was far superior to any African.

Next I started The Not Yet by Moira Crone. I thought I'd give this independently published author a try after a computer generated recommendation and using Kobo's 90% promo code. Unfortunately, I abandoned this book after 50 pages. There wasn't anything that held my interest. The sci-fi elements were minimal. Also, the author switches between three time periods in the main character's life. It's a mechanism I greatly dislike. Her writing skill was adequate, though. The author mainly publishes short stories so perhaps that is where her strength lies.
Now I'm reading Dark Eden by Chris Beckett, a British social worker and lecturer. Independently published in the UK and Kobo promo code eligible. I'm only 20 pages in but it does have potential. Last edited by Fbone; 12-02-2013 at 06:39 PM. |

Dark Eden won the Clarke Award, I believe, so you'd hope there's something to it. I'm pretty sure I have it myself, but I haven't read it.
Having finished Mark Billngham's Sleepyhead, which was so-so, I have finally started The System of the World by Neal Stephenson. This is the last part of the Baroque trilogy, and I've been putting it off for years because of its intimidating size, but I'm trying to (a) finish a few series I have left dangling, (b) clear up some of my more unwieldy paperbacks, and (c) read the Locus SF Award winners, so it seemed it was finally time. I'm enjoying it, but it is quite dense and slow. It could very well last me the rest of the year. |

I tried to read John Wilkes Booth: Beyond The Grave by W.C.Jameson. Jameson claims to be related to Booth, and to have had access to sources that indicate that Booth escaped and lived for decades after the assassination.
![]() I had to abandon it at page 19 - too many obvious factual errors accumulating, such as Andrew Johnson being Vice President in 1964. (eyes rolling) |

Starting Michael J. Sullivan's The Crown Conspiracy, first of six in The Riyria Revelations series. Not bad so far. The author was named by io9.com in 2012 as one of the "most successful self-published Sci-Fi and Fantasy authors".

Recently completed "Three Act Tragedy" by Agatha Christie. This was her 23rd book, and was originally published in 1935. The book is notable in that it's the one Agatha Christie book in which Mr Satterthwaite, who previously appeared as one of the main characters in the collection of short stories, "The Mysterious Mr Quin", works with Poirot.

After taking most of the last week off from reading (playing games on my commute instead) I have started Blindsight by Peter Watts. This has excellent reviews and has been on my TBR list for a long time, so I am looking forward to it.

Finally read Frank Herbert's classic DUNE over the weekend. It's one I've wanted to read for a long time. I enjoyed it - I thought the world-building aspect of it was amazing. Has anyone read any of the rest of this series? And if so, did you like them?
