Elsewhere (CNET) I have noticed comments that MS is now attacking Samsung. Their 10.1 inch Tablet in particular. It seems that MS tablets are so superior that other people are somehow obligated to close their own tablet shops down.

What is happening?
Is the gentle sweet cuddlesome giant that was MS now gone? Has a big meanie taken its place?

Acer C720 4GB from Amazon for $249. It should arrive tomorrow. I'm inheriting a netbook that will solve my audiobook problem. Now I'm free to switch to Chrome and ditch my desktop.

Not to be the curmudgeon, but I just bought a used MacBook Pro off eBay. For $240. Other than booting up faster or having a longer battery life, I'm hard pressed to come up with a list of things I can do on a ChromeBook that I couldn't do on this, and I have a long list of things I can do (and oddly enough, actually do) on a MacBook that I can't do on a ChromeBook. Oh, and it's got a 15.4" screen, and I always seem to like bigger screens.

It's not really fair to compare second-hand prices with new, but the main thrust of the argument for Chromebooks is that they take away the hassle of using a Windows or Mac laptop.

Of course you can do the same and more on a traditional machine, nobody is disputing that. Once you've owned a Chromebook, though, you realise just how much other stuff you have to do on a Windows PC, or even a Mac, that just isn't needed on a ChromeOS device.

So, if the Chromebook can handle all you need it to do, why saddle yourself with the extra hassle?

That's an exceptional deal, if the Pro was in good condition, and of relatively modern vintage...unless you left off a zero.

Then you have utterly missed the point of Chromebooks. It's not about doing more than a standard laptop, it's about doing what a lot of people need, for a lot less money and a lot less maintenance. And it boots up faster.

I personally wouldn't get CromeBook, unless it was a third computer. I do too many things on my main rig. But if I was choosing an "Internet" computer for my mother it would be choice Number One. It has much less chance of being screwed by an user, a virus or something else.
Plus, there are much less things to confuse the user.

For a tinkerer that is not afraid to salvage parts from a Dumper there are much better and cheaper options
