I don't like ebooks with regard to the TBR pile.

While reading from paper, I got about 4-10 books at once; maybe 1-3 series, and I'd read one book from one series, one from another, and so on, until everything was done. Then I got another 4-10 books, and so on.

All these cheap books and some huge almost-free collections (darn you, Delphi) have netted me a TBR pile of over 300 books in only two years. (And then I'm counting the Delphi collections as one book each, which they obviously aren't.)

Problem, you say?

Yes. I only read about 50 books a year, and the TBR pile causes me to want to read something ELSE than the book I'm reading at the moment. It doesn't matter what I'm reading, I always have that pile and the sense that I must read more and faster in the back of my mind. To be honest, having such a large TBR makes me feel rushed, and I don't like being rushed. I'm no fracking river with a maelstrom in the middle.

Having all books on my reader makes this worse.

Therefore I've wiped all books from my Kindle, and I just put one (1) on the device, and I treat Calibre like a library that's 10 miles away. I never open it and never browse through it, except to add books, and to put one (1) book on my e-reader.

It also creates the sense that the e-reader is a book I'm reading, instead of a data storage device that happens to be able to open books.... I only have two books on the reader when I'm nearing the end of one. If I end that one, I *WILL* start the book that I put onto the reader some time ago.

Ouch. I'm glad to say that I don't feel this way. I'm glad you've found a solution.

I keep around fifty or so books from my TBR on my device, so that I have a choice of book to read next when I finish one, and so that I don't have to work hard to remember which book is the next in any particular series - I only keep the next one on my device.

i have 660 books in my freebie shelf of tbr and 80 bought books which I have read 8. I never buy ones I wont read however if I am not enjoying a freebie - or don't like the sound of the reviews on amazon or goodreads of a freebie I don't hesitate to bin it...

This is how I handle series. I blame (or am grateful to) Calibre for my large ebook library. I love browsing through my stockpile of books, which gives me a feeling similar to the old days of browsing bookstores and public library shelves, but now they are all mine. Plus nobody can actually observe that I am a book hoarder. And I am carrying all my books with me on my travels.

This morning I am suffering some angst. I don't need to buy another book ever. But the Black Friday sales are calling to me, particularly the Georgette Heyer books I don't yet own. I haven't yet read all her books purchased from Fictionwise and BooksonBoard. Oh dear.

It rather depends on the discount. If they're $2 each or less, I suggest you get them. You'll want them eventually, the thing is not to buy them now when a better discount might be along later.

I bought 70-odd Agatha Christie books from Fictionwise ages age, when I got them for around $1 each. I also bought lots of Georgette Heyer a year ago when BooksOnBoard (IIRC) has a sale and they were around $2 each.

And it's OK to have books like that waiting in a TBR pile. One wouldn't want to rush through them in year. They should be stretched out, and read no more than one a month.

I edit the titles of my series ebooks to encode the series name and number, so that part isn't a problem. As for remembering what's next, I tend to catch up on a series all at once. That is, I'll read the current volume and then proceed straight through with the rest until I'm finished; I just tackled four novels and a tie-in novella that way, and I've just started an eight-book (well, trilogy omnibus plus five sequels) series where I expect to do the same.

The biggest TBR problem I have now is the Ent cemetery. My Kobo displays the current book's cover, so when I finish a book there, I feel a strong pressure to start a new book - just to avoid The Blank Screen. I also try not to read multiple books in parallel, with the exception of a graphic novel or something similar that I can read in one or two sittings. As a result, since I try to restrict myself to ebooks for new purchases, my forest of dead trees isn't growing...but it's not shrinking, either. It's just aging. Complicating matters is the fact that some of these books are in literal stacks, meaning that pulling one can become a game of literary Jenga.

What I need to do is, once I finish a series (or at least get caught up with it) on the Kobo, open (but don't start) a new book on it to kill The Blank Screen, but then put the ereader down and tackle a physical series. The one flaw in that plan is my monthly book club meeting, which takes place in a bookstore. I can bring an ereader in there, but not a physical book...so that tends to influence my reading choices around that date.

I got 13 Georgette Heyer books on sale at Kobo using the blackfriday50 code for $1.00 each. Almost bought them at Amazon this morning at $1.99 each, so I'm happy I waited a bit. Now...no more books.

Guys, how do you know about these sales? I always seem to miss them. I'm aware that Kobo sends out discount codes. But what about the other websites? For instance, how do I check Amazon books that are on sale?

I get notices from eReaderIQ about authors or particular books for which I've requested notification when there is a sale at Amazon. If there is a current high discount code at Kobo I will then check to see if the books are on sale there and if they are couponable.

Because I have plenty of books to read I can wait until good sales to buy books on my wishlist (maintained on my notification list at ereaderiq). The Georgette Heyer books I just purchased at Kobo have been on my wish list for 15 months.

I subscribe to the threads in reading recommendations for SF/Fantasy and Mystery/Crime. I also check out the Kindle Daily Deal.

And then there's luzme.com

You can register (free), and add in books, and get them to email you when the price drops at any of the retailers in your country.
