A short interim note: The latest build, 652, is probably broken for all Kobos. The framebuffer code changed and it is probably presenting a rotated display, not reflected in the touchscreen handling.
Edit: Follow-up builds should work OK again. Last edited by hawhill; 11-27-2013 at 11:20 AM. |

Kobo Aura goes in Nickel standby in koreader build 656! So it seems the latest overhaul has some serious positive side effects!
I didn't realize it, until I though koreader crashed on me, without rebooting. No response, whatsoever. Pushing the power button turned the frontlight back on and voilà: everything works. Could this mean that we can go back to Nickel from Koreader without rebooting? Update: Now it just crashed. Not too stable this build. Last edited by Markismus; 11-28-2013 at 08:41 AM. |

Going back to Nickel ought to work now - no more fiddling with framebuffer settings. I'm interested in crash logs, in any case.

I've posted it in issue #301.
So what happens exactly is that
Only thing to do for a working sleep function is kill the light before the Kobo Aura goes to sleep and reset Nickel sleep timer after power is back on. Last edited by Markismus; 11-28-2013 at 12:36 PM. |

Ah, I think nickel still running will always interfere. On the Kindle, we "killall -stop" the framework process and after being done, we "killall -cont" it.

Sergeyvl uses that for KoboLaucher, too:
# run launcher killall -STOP nickel $ROOT/launcher -qws -stylesheet $STYLESHEET killall -CONT nickel I'll try it with koreader. Last edited by Markismus; 11-28-2013 at 01:55 PM. |

No reboot for koreader build 656!
No reboot anymore, indeed!
I've changed koreader_kobo.sh to: #!/bin/sh export LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" # we're always starting from our working directory cd /mnt/onboard/.kobo/koreader/ # export trained OCR data directory export TESSDATA_PREFIX="data" # export dict directory export STARDICT_DATA_DIR="data/dict" # stop Nickel killall -STOP nickel # finally call reader ./reader.lua /mnt/sd/.Library 1> koreader.log.`date +%s` 2>&1 # continue with nickel killall -CONT nickel And it works. ![]() (If I get problems with the sleepfunction, I'll post it.) |

I'll have to try that. Oddly, if I "killall nickel", as I did before 656, the screen display is upside down, on my AuraHD. (Not rotated exactly, the touch events are in their normal places. So I can poke at the top where the home Icon is supposed to be, not where it is on the bottom.)
I tried just remarking out the "reboot" and the home icon does get me back in nickel, but I had to poke the screen, to get a refresh, to tell where I was. {Sergey mentioned the same trouble, needing a refresh.) Edit: tried the -STOP & -CONT switches and got the same result as just removing the "reboot" line. I'll keep this as it doesn't flip my screen image, and it should have stopped nickel, which could be almost as good as killing it. Luck; Ken PS; @Markismus; killing the rest and closing the open files causes no problem. Last edited by Ken Maltby; 11-28-2013 at 02:43 PM. |

I don't know if this existed before 656 but I tried adding some .png and then .jpg files but the .png didn't show in File Manager and when I select a .jpg Koreader crashes.
These are the same image files that work in the Kobo slideshow. The .png ones. Ran the .png back through Gimp2 and exported as .jpg and now they are working without crashing Koreader, but they look pretty bad. They have 8 bit depth, I'll try 16bit and see if that works better.
