Those are the final prices after you subtract the value of the free gift card the store gives you for buying the device. Up front, you pay full price or a minor discount price.

When it comes to electronic devices, manufacturers generally don't allow retailers to heavily discount their products. To get around this restriction, retailers will either offer free gift cards or bundle in added accessories to entice you to buy.

So for your example, you pay Staples full price ($119) for the Paperwhite 2 and they'll give you a free $20 Staples gift card.

oh I got it. Thanks much. I've ordered 2 kindles 2 days ago (while waiting for the Aura HD) and I didn't see any such discount

IPads selling out online. Target is limited to store stock only for lower end models. Walmart gives me the sorry can't display iPad page due to high volume [now sold out]. Best Buy sold out online and in stores.

Staples still shows availability for $449. [now sold out]

When I purchased my tablets online they were showing as in and out of stock throughout the day. I don't know if it'll be the same with the iPads and other items, but I suggest you keep trying their website every hour or so if you want to purchase there.
