No but it does seem to be a requirement that the 'detective' in a cozy mystery be a woman. Or an animal (usually owned by a woman). Very sexist.

Yes, I was. Thank you. I think I'd argue with some of those (e.g. I don't consider Nero Wolfe a 'cozy') but there's at least one (Rabbi Small) that I'll agree is a cozy. I haven't read him in probably 15 years. And thanks for the link, too. That's a list I'll save.

some cozies are also romances, and some romances - with a mystery in a cozy scenario - can be cozies.

The classics of British detective fiction would all count as "cozies", and many of them have male detectives. Eg:

Agatha Christie's "Poirot" books.
Dorothy L. Sayers' "Lord Peter Wimsey" books.
Margery Allingham's "Campion" books.
Ngaio Marsh's "Inspector Alleyn" books (perhaps less "cozy" than the above)

I'd add Rhys Bowen's Constable Evan Evans series as well - definitely cozies IMO.

I would categorize S.S. Van Dine's Philo Vance books as cozies.

I thought one of the key features of a cozy is the amateur status of the sleuth, so I'm surprised at some of the inclusions on the list.

so anyway... I asked because I really REALLY don't like romances and would not like to have them included

I may be wrong, but I believe that this thread was sort of a spin-off from the romance bargain and freebie thread. I have no problem with this thread encompassing any book that falls within the cozy mystery genre, including any that also contain a romance. We can choose what appeals to us and ignore the rest.

It was an spin-off because some of us who visit this thread like cozies too, but they don't catch a lot of place at the thriller thread. And you can't usually say if there's romance or not in your cozy till you read it

This is so true. For example most of the Agatha Cristie books have at least a bit of romance in it. And she is definitely mystery writer.

The mystery solving is always a central part of any cozy. The emphasis is put on plots and character development. There is no graphic violence and profanities. I would also say that the women amateur sleuth are in majority.

The Banks books, excellent though they are, are very definitely NOT cozies. Extremely grim, with a lot of graphic depictions of violence.
