@cryzed: So far, it has. We're talking about Amazon though, so we can't really guarantee anything . |

NiLuJe, sorry for all the questions, but the Paperwhite 2 is a bit too new to get accurate information: Do you know of a way that would allow me to downgrade the software?

@cryzed: Unless you backed up your own device on 5.4.0, you're probably SOL on that front.

Niluje: so the new paperwhite can't be downgraded as the old one, just using .bin firmwares?

@Aeris: Which .bin? Once you've answered that question (hint: there are none besides 5.4.2), you've got the answer . |

Yep, that sucks. Oh well nothing I can do, except hope that they start making better decisions than the ones they are doing right now...

If you do have the required files (copies of the kernel and main partition, that is), then the approach to overwrite them is the same as outlined here. But no, not simple, and definitely not idiot-proof. |

Would it be possible to use these backups and write them back to my device, provided that Yolina would be willing to upload them? Or would I overwrite some important unique data within the partition?

Damn... I was hoping for something like doing a nandroid backup (you know, poke at button - done ) The most "complicated" thing I've achieved was to back up the EFS folder on my phone via a terminal emulator by following line-by-line instructions so I think I'll pass. I would have quite like to make a backup of 5.4.0 but hey-ho, I'll live without. Last edited by Yolina; 11-24-2013 at 01:38 PM. |

(Note: I don't have a PW2 yet, so this is just an "informed guess" based on previous Kindles [K4, Touch, PW]). PS: My PW2 should be arriving next week, so provided it still comes with 5.4.0, I'll most probably create and upload those images. | |

That would be absolutely great, thanks so much. Although one would need a working rescue pack partition to do that right? Meaning, boot from diags and have access to the shell... I know that I created partition backups, and even backups of the kernel etc. -- but of course actually writing them back wouldn't work while the system itself is running on the partition you want to overwrite, or am I missing something? EDIT: Yeah, just took a closer look at the document linked by ixtab -- one would need such a modified diags partition, hmm... Last edited by cryzed; 11-24-2013 at 01:56 PM. |
