I can see what is causing lots of the differences here. Some folks are Collectors with thousands of eBooks organized with Calibre and most books stripped of DRM using Apprentice Alf. One person posted here they owned 6,000 eBooks. Those folks may have hundreds of Collections.

Others, like me, are Readers and only have a small number of eBooks. In my entire life I have only read 93 books per Goodreads and am only reading 2 books as of now. I have 60 books in my "Want to Read" shelf on Goodreads which I am sure I will never complete in the entire rest of my life. I have split my eBooks into 8 Collections and one more for Active Content (I own 2). I have set up no Collections for my Apps since I only own 32. I only own 35 eBooks which I purchased from Amazon.

Prior to 1990 I must have read a total of FOUR books in the previous 70 years. I only started really reading books when Microsoft started publishing eBooks for PC's in 1990.

Plus, I have a tolerant view of bugs and problems and usually work around them in software and hardware. Others get floored by the same problems and usually uninstall or return those items.

If you are a Collector owning thousands of eBooks, Kindles are not for you. Investigate some other device or confine your collections to a PC with the proper software.

I have a hunch that the vast majority of eBook purchasers from Amazon are readers like me and do not own thousands of eBooks. Thus, all the Kindle models have suited me just fine. I only exchanged my first Kindle because it kept shorting out.

The purpose of Kindles is to READ eBooks. They are not designed to collect and control thousands of eBooks. There well may be other devices more suitable for that purpose. Microsoft has new tablets which now run Windows 8.1. They may be better suited for the new software apps especially Office 2013 where Excel and OneNote may be far better suited for managing Collections of up to 100,000 books.

I did, my K3 got OTA update back then. I really like use_alt_fonts much more than whatever any other update offers.

Once again this is an assumption on your part. I am a reader, and have been for over 30 years. And while I am also a collector, this year alone I have already read 217 books, and that is not including the novellas and essays, or the books I have re-read which I do not have on my Goodreads account. Sorry, but 93 books in your collection in my opinion makes you a casual reader. And stripping drm and all that other stuff has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the problems with all these collections. If you perused the various forums and boards you would in fact see that most readers are not like you, and those of us who have taken advantage of the collections feature is now plagued by all these problems. Perhaps since this issue does not directly affect you, you should keep you inexperienced opinion to yourself and let those of us who are affected by it discuss to come up with a solution to the problem???

I'm pretty sure Amazon doesn't market their devices primarily to those who only read a half dozen books per year! They would go broke.

Can you ever admit when Amazon doesn't implement something as well as they could have? Seems like it's always the users fault in your view because they are not like you. It's fine that you've read 93 books in your life, but many read more than that in a year and Amazon's software needs to work for both kinds of readers not just some.

Microsoft has a new Cloud called Sky Dive. They also now sell tablets running Windows 8.1 and Office 2013.

Those tablets would easily handle up to 100,000 books with total control inside Office 2013. Some folks run entire businesses just with Office 2013.

Another advantage of those tablets is they would be in total sync with your Office 2013 on your PC. Amazon is simply not suited to match Microsoft in that area. I am sure there are lots of apps now compatible with Windows 8.1 which can read and catalog eBooks in the numbers you require and would be synced between the MS tablets and your PC.

Frankly, from 1990 to about 2007 I only read Microsoft eBooks on my PC. Had they introduced eInk readers, I never would have gone to Amazon for eBooks.

Over 6000 in my archive. None of those have been stripped. None of them are on my device. Nor do I want them to show up "grayed out" on my device. If I want to browse them, I can do that on my Kindle Fire or any android Kindle app.

I read 250+ books per year, every year, and have done so for decades.

How much time do you spend reading 250 books per year? Do you work on a job or run a business? When I used to work, I had just enough time to sleep, eat and shower outside of my work. I had NO time for books and very little time for even family. My entire life was in my work back then.

I only started really reading books after I retired. Even now I have to manage my investments most of the time. Otherwise, how can one live?

I'm the kind of person that reads anytime, any where. Pushing kids on the swing. Sitting in the bathroom. Standing in line at the store. If I have a minute, I'm reading. And I am relatively fast. I read this way through full time jobs, 4 babies, and now, 4 growing kids and working from home.

Good point about browsing the entire Cloud on a fast device like a Fire or iPad or Computer. Unfortunately eInk devices are way to slow and cumbersome due to the nature of eInk screen refreshing to be useful for browsing a large library.

Simaru, I am a READER, I have 400 books in the Amazon Cloud and hubby has bought around 700/800, so that's 1200 books in 28 collections. Every book is in a collection, either his or mine. I don't want all 1200 on my Kindle, either downloaded or grey'd out.

Well this certainly seems to throw a spanner in the works! I nearly bought a PW2 today as I've decided that a front-light would actually be useful, (and Kobo Glo sounds like the light can't be turned down enough in a dark bedroom.) However, we already have a Kindle Keyboard and Kindle PW1 on my Amazon account but used independently by other family members at home. So would this firmware update affect collections on my PW2, (if I purchased one), or would it be 'safe' since the other Kindles are not PW2? I don't want my PW2 to be cluttered with all the collections from these other Kindles!
