November 5th was the 3G release date if you pre-ordered early enough. I bought the version without special offers which ships immediately. I think the 3G with Special Offers is now mid-November.

I just found the light on the PW1 is more pleased than in the PW2. The light is more even but went more directly to the eye. This makes eyes feel strain faster than the PW1.

This effect happens stronger on the white pw2s. The creamy ones are effected too but slower.

This is just my guess based on the replacements I tried.

I was underwhelmed by the features of the PW2 coming from a PW1. I also took my PW1 to the local BB and compared it with the PW2. Although the lighting is not ideal at the store, short of the more even light along the bottom I could not see a significant difference. The software differences also do not bring benefits that I really want.

Although the PW2 seems like a great reader, for me, it just does not bring enough to get me to upgrade from my pw1. I will keep my hopes for the PW3 to have continually improving contrast, lighting, more memory, speaker and, be still my heart, removable media.

PS: I also wouldn't mind it if they put the power button on the top instead of on the bottom where I can accidentally push it.

I returned my Paperwhite 2 after numerous defective units. I picked up my retina iPad Mini yesterday and I could not be happier. This is going to the the first year since 2009 without a Kindle, but I could not deal with the exchange game any longer. Hopefully the next version of the Paperwhite is easier for Amazon to make.

Good for you Drew if that works for you. Unfortunately I don't like reading on my retina display. The way it projects light is fine for games or a quick look over a magazine but for reading books E-Ink is still what works best. I get tired focussing on reading after very little time on the retina display.

Also, there is the problem of distraction. When I read I don't want e-mails, texts or tempting games popping up every few seconds. For me the more focused device works better. Whatever gets us reading.

I still want the Kindle, but I gave up after 7 tries with pinholes and slanted screens .

I understand how you feel. I am on the my third Kindle Fire HDX 7 and debating if I should return it as they wont replace this one because the blue border is normal.

That seems to be the new way of dealing with issues, they aren't faults or imperfections, they are normal.... the colour blobs and shadows are normal (PW), the blue border is normal (Fire HDX).

No, do some proper testing and fix these imperfections instead of continually rushing to release new & improved models every single year!

I'd definitely return it. How can a Kindle have a normal blue border that interferes with reading is beyond me? I love the Retina Mini. I'd save for that as the HDX is not even in the same league.

So today I take the plunge with the paperwhite 2. My order has arrived at the store and I'm going to pick it up later. I'm proud of myself as I managed to hold out for a whole month before caving into the latest and greatest Kindle.

So I've just set up my new paperwhite and put it on charge. So far I've noticed that the contrast is noticeably better on the paperwhite 2. The screen on my PW1 is whiter with the light on, however my PW2 is more uniform (no coloured hues!). The PW2 also doesn't have the shadowing at the bottom although that never bothered me. I have 1 pinhole/bright spot but it's at the bottom where the progress stuff is so it won't bother me.
