For me it's very true. I learn and retain lots through reading, but very little through listening. It's one reason why I avoid audiobooks like the plague; not only do they take forever, but they require my full concentration or I get completely lost.

I can't imagine listening to one while driving, I'd never make it out of the driveway.

My daughter is in fourth grade and the only time I see her read an actual book is when it's part of the school homework. There's a ton of kids books just gathering dust.

Sexual auditory dimorphism is a long established and well documented fact in species besides humans:

It is well known that the auditory systems of anurans are well adapted to detect species specific vocalizations, and that the behavioral response to these vocalizations often differs between the sexes. Do note:

In all three systems, the sensory systems of males and females are differently adapted to receive signals that are biologically useful and beneficial to survival or reproduction.

In most cases, it is essential to male sanity and survival *not* to hear certain things. Most notably; "Does this make me look fat?"

Kids learn by imitation. So if parents read a lot, there is a big chance kids will too. Don't blame it all on this generation. Parents are those who are in the wrong almost always, not kids.
