I bricked my Kobo and finally un-bricked it by followin https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=209122
While looking for a solution, I noticed that one can expose the bare Android o/s and wondered if there is a list of Kobo Glo images which can easily be installed using the methods described in the thread referenced above. [Upadte] Let's rephrase the question as "Question: what neat stuff can run on the hardware of a Kobo Glo, and does anyone have an image file which I can simply copy onto my hardware and try it out?" I think you might be a bit confused. The Glo (and all other Kobo eInk based readers) use as their base O/S Linux and have nothing at all to do with Android.
Yes people have got Android running on the Glo but that does not mean that they are originally based on Android. |

Yes, I do appreciate that. Android is just a program running under Linux (on the Dalvik virtual machine/byte code interpreter).
I was just wondering if anyone had exposed the underlying Android or under-underlying Linux to perform some neat tricks(or even a different eBook reader). If so, though, rather than follow their instructions step by step, I was hoping that there was an image. There should be no copyright issues with that. |

Android is not a single/simple program, it is a full OS. The kernel is a special Linux kernel, that's right. No images yet (except for the roughly fitting Tolido original image), and potential copyright issues. Which might be resolvable.

I do understand. Android is not a single program, nor is Linux. We can split hairs and argue if it is an application or an o/s (I agree that it is an o/s, but it is an o/s that runs on top of another o/s. Call it a program, a service, whatever you want (maybe I was sloppy in my description, in which case I apologize)).
Technically, it is a Virtual Machine, as I stated. But ... The point, if we have to make one, is that Android runs on top of Linux. You can't have Android without Linux. Maybe I should draw a little ASCII art diagram of a two step pyramid? This has no relevance to my question. Question: what neat stuff can run on the hardware of a Kobo Glo, and does anyone have an image file which I can simply copy onto my hardware and try it out? Thank in advance for any help with that. My initial thought is that there should be no copyright problems with Linux, but I realize that parts of android are not totally FOSS (someone is trying to replace the non-FOSS parts for another distro, but I forget the name). Thanks for your reply. |
