Less "ghosting" on pearl eInk devices - the idea
There is a new technology called "regal" that allows for faster page turning and eliminates “ghosting”. As you can read here http://goodereader.com/blog/electron...egal-and-carta it should work with normal pearl displays which are installed in many Kindle devices:

You can look at differences with source codes for different models.

It looks like this technology is software solution that bases on special waveform data.

Does anyone want to try to port it and test it with other devices? Probably you will have to read Aura's waveform data from its internal SD card.

Except the waveform data is pretty screen-specific, possibly even assembly-line specific, IIRC.

But maybe having a few different samples makes it possible to try all of them and choose the one that works best for you. Or you can see how big the differences are and play with them with a hex editor. Even if it is assembly-line - maybe there is some kind of documentation of it?

I was only glancing at eInk driver source codes but I saw there is a code that enters "test" mode. Maybe it is even designed for callibration mode. Executing it may be a good place to start. But I need samples of working waveform data first.

So if anyone of you have Kobo Aura (the new one, not HD) and can telnet to it, please execute the following command:

and send the output here. I would be gratefull. Note that the device name (mmcblk0) can be different - I'm not sure as I don't have Aura. You can look which devices you have on your reader ("ls /dev" command). Thanks!

Anyone else noticed difference with partial refresh on Kindle PW1 fw 5.4.4 ? If you take a look from real close you should see horizontal stripes (whiter ones on display areas where row/line of text is, darker stripes between text) that are same height as chosen font size and that the stripe size/height changes as you change font size? It seems that areas where the text will be get full refresh and the rest of the display is partially refreshed?

I'm to lazy to downgrade to fw 5.3.9 to double check, but I don't recall seeing such obvious stripes, but then again I've always been reading with full refresh on for each page and only tried partial refresh when I bought my PW1.
Maybe someone else will soon share their observation...

Of course I'm reading with full refresh, I like my fonts to be sharp and I'm not bothered by display flashing. If flashing didn't occur I probably would never blink :-)
I've just tried partial refresh again to see if it improved, if PW1 now includes "regal".

It doesn't; it's not something that a new firmware version can change - it's in the screen waveform data on the screen EEPROM.

The PW2 has a Carta screen with Regal refresh; the PW1 doesn't, and never will have.
