Yeah, but I'm paying for it now. Ever since last night I have been feeling sick. I had a minor bout at the Houston Meetup, but then I was fine until last night. Then, I was up the whole damn night sitting on the porcelain throne and praying for death.

Then ... all day today ... more of the same. So, I'm hungry as all get out and worried about eating anything much because it might start all over again. There are some great nights and then there are those that just plain suck. This is one of the latter.

As for the noise cancellation headphones .... I've only used them on planes. However, I am lucky in that I have very selective hearing when I'm asleep. I can sleep through almost anything, but if one of my cats meows for me .... I'm up and bolt awake. That was even true when I lived in downtown San Diego ... I'd sleep through the traffic and the trolley sounds (I lived right near a crossing ... with one of those clanging gates), but if Newton meowed, even if he was outside the condo, I woke up.

I wish there was some way to pass this ability on to those who need it. I don't so much now since I live out in the country. No SHUMS out here ... not yet anyway.

I think that's called "mothering"! Maybe not the ignoring of other things, but the ability to be tuned to the cries of your own babies. I don't have any kids, but my puppies would awaken me, whereas lawn mowers, garbage trucks -- nahh!

So in my case it's "fathering"? I'm usually a very hard sleeper, but this morning at 3.30am our youngest doggie started barfing, and I was awake and up after the first sign of it, you know, when they start to sound like they got the hicups or something (dunno what its called in english, but we call it "ulka")

I call it "yorking" but that's because I have a Yorkshire Terrier. Ulka actually sounds about right, though.

Yepp, it's a word formed from the sounds being made

"Parenting," anyway.

(We call it "acking" at our house when the cats do it.)

Yes, I agree. I'm a heavy sleeper but just one whimper from a nearby baby and I'm awake. And my daughter is now 34, so it seems that one doesn't unlearn the habit.
(I also turn round whenever I hear an small voice in the shopping centre say, 'Mum' in a whiny way. Again, ti's pure force of habit.)

But I too hope that you feel better soon Ricky.

We call it "hawking" (nothing to do with the bird, of course - again, it's the noise).

I remember when we got our first Airedale, Monty. When he arrived, and slept in our room at night in the crate, we were getting up all night with "Is he breathing...he doesn't sound like he's breathing...no, it's okay, there he goes". Eventually we learnt to sleep through it.

At our last house, Monty would always move off the carpet and onto the glass at the top of the stairs to hawk something up - a very considerate boy, he was.

Cheers,
Marc

Making Mexican pizzas - Recipe - Corn tortilla, put refried beans on it, then some pepperone sausage, then some shredded cheese (cheddar, or monterrey jack, or both). Bake for 30 min at 350 F, take out and cool a bit, cover with chopped lettuce and tomato. Serve with Dos XX dark beer. Buenos, senors y senoras y senoritas.....

Ah, never thought of myself as having the tiniest bit of maternal instinct ... but hey.

And, yes I'm still sick. As long as I stick to eating dry Cheerios and grape soda, I seem to be ok, but if I deviate much off of that, then I feel like complete garbage.

A Mexican pizza sounds soooo good too. Maybe I'll see if I can sneak a little chocolate in after my Cheerios dinner .... that will make me feel a little better, psychologically if not physically.

You should say parental instinct... unless you breast feed that is.

Ah, so a woman who gives birth, but doesn't breast feed is only a "parent?"

Not that I gave birth to any of my cats, but still ......

From yorking, hawking, and ulka-ing to Mexican Pizza. Who says this forum doesn't have a true sense of propriety?

Oh right, pretty much anyone who reads it.
