From an Aura HD to an Aura

Has anyone gotten from an Aura HD to an Aura?

On the one hand I'm a little bit worried regarding the resolution loss, but on the other hand the Aura's size/weight/feeling of the back are strong selling points.

Now that the Aura has been tested for about a couple of months, I was wondering if we have more feedbacks. All of them are welcome

Edit: I tried to compare both of them, but usually an in-store experience is quite different from a real life one.

You're not sacrificing much because the human naked eye doesn't pick that much details. The Aura have 212 dpi and the hd have 265 dpi. Just ask yourself do you need a small compact screen vs. a larger screen. Also would capacitive or resistive touch screen work better for you?

Just a clarification, it's IR not resistive.

It also depends on factors like what size font you use (you will feel the difference in resolutions with smaller fonts). You will also feel the difference with more complex fonts (japanese kanji, hiragana and katakana) as well as with graphics and charts. But for normal reading you should be fine (though depending on your sight you might totally notice the difference in sharpness).

To clarify, I don't have the Aura HD but I do have experience with the resolutions on cell phones and I can totally tell the difference between 306 ppi and 465ppi).

If you have access to a Glo check it out, it's the same res of the Aura so it will look quite similar (though not the same).

Thymaster, I am not the original poster. I was giving my opinion which is as valid as yours. I gave my experience with different resolutions but my experience will be different from others. Eyesight, use, etc. all matter and in the end I haven't tried out an HD so it's still as "hands-on" as the OP would like. I meant no offense

The difference in the screen size isn't that much of a deal to me, but the better grasp I seem to have when holding the Aura is.
I feel as if the characters are somewhat washed out on the Aura, once again it's only an in-store experience. Could it be because of the capacitive capability? Could it be only in my head?

No it's not only in your head. I just posted about this in the 'Which One Should I Buy' forum. Amazon seem to have made it a little better on the new Paperwhite compared to last years original release (possibly related to the new e-ink carta v pearl as it supposedly increases the contrast), but the capacitive touch screen does add an extra layer to the screen and there do seem to be drawbacks to it.

If you look at the photos evelynne_r posted in the Kobo Aura impressions thread (here), comparing the Aura and the Glo, its noticeable in the second photo that the blacks look better on the Glo. On the other hand, the screen/lighting looks better on the Aura.....

I have to admit that the Aura HD screen is a thing of beauty. And probably has the best light on the market too. A bit less portable though. And I agree that the extra res is not necessary for reading ascii. But it's so pretty

I wonder if after getting used to the resolution and resulting sharpness of my AuraHD, if even a minor reduction wouldn't be noticed. Of course I guess I could just use a larger font, but I would already have lost lines of text to the smaller screen size.

We humans are an adaptable lot and I would probably get used to it over time, but why would I want to?

Actually I have no trouble going back and forth between tha Aura HD and the Mini. But I think it's due to the fact that I read on those in very different situations. Also in my experience the font looks less sharp when the light is on, so if the resolution is already lower as is what will it become with the light?

If I were unsure which one to buy between the Glo and the Aura, I would go for the Aura (right now they're at the same price but that won't last long) because the light is a big deal for me.

I'd go for the Aura too if that was the choice. Neither is perfect, but despite the slight loss of clarity (there may also be something in the fact the Aura is using a plastic screen too?), the light on the Aura is just so much better.

I really do not like the blue tinge of the light on the Glo (I know it's better now compared to the first batch that were released), it just feels harsh to my eyes. I much prefer the more mellow lighting that both the Aura and the PW have.

Hi everyone,

I forgot to update this thread

In November I bought a refurbished Aura and liked it very much. Nice weight, nice form factor and the great ability to control the brightness with two fingers.
However when lighted the screen colour wasn't even, pretty much the same way as my first Aura HD but more disturbing, and the contrast wasn't that great. Both problems were moot with the light off.
In the end, I preferred to get a refund and I kept on using the Mini and Aura HD.

I have an Aura and was debating about moving to a HD but after seeing a couple in stores and playing with them I actually prefer the Aura. The screen is brighter and just as clear (at least in my opinion) and I love the size and lightness of it.

I have and use both. WITHOUT a Kobo-branded Sleepcover, the Aura is more pleasant to hold for three reasons:

Aura has a lovely, textured back; Aura HD has a smooth plasticky back

Aura is much lighter

Aura has flush bezel, making the whole front one flat surface.

BUT the Kobo Sleepcover for the Aura is garbage; very uncomfortable because of sharp-edged side clips. The Sleepcover for the HD is nice.
