My 2 biggest problems:
- Frequent fan noise, never that intense before the update.
- Stutters when streaming from my Mac mini iTunes server.

I've googled because of the ridiculous fan noise: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5489411

I've tried the tip recommended:
Shutt off, Shift-Ctrl-Alt+Power, release all 4 buttons at the same time. Power on.
For now, no fan noise. I hope, it keeps that way.
My poor MacBook Air was that loud and ran that warm, that I really worried about its lifespan...
Fingers crossed, that the fan noise doesn't come back...

Hmm...
Maybe this really solved my problems?!
So far, no fan noise again. I have to watch it, but the last 30 minutes went quite smoothly...
But I have no idea, what this combination, described above, actually did (why would the SMC behave differently after a standard OS update?)....
Anyway, worth a shot if you've got problems with Mavericks. After all - it hardly can get any worse...

Oh man! The fan is back!
Maybe not quite as intense as before the trick, but definitely still way louder than before the update.
And my iTunes stream still stutters. Not as frequent as before. But before the update it never stuttered at all...
If I find the time, I'll make a clean install and definitely won't be using Mavericks.
By far the worst update I've ever experienced.
Crippled a once (once being 2 days ago) phantastic unit sheer useless.

A play of words comes to mind:
In German, there's the word "Depp" (as in Johnny). Loosely translated it means idiot.
From now on, I won't refer to Apple, but to Depple!
Damned fools...

I hate those icons.
Same as on iOS7.
Shiny and cheesy.
To me, there's no appeal anymore. It all looks kind of childish and far from professional tools.

Should be at the end of this year. But I'm also thinking about the Miix2 by Lenovo and the Acer W4-820 (not W3!). MS is being slow with announcing the Surface Mini...

Probably can't be compared.
But if I look at the build quality and the well thought out details of Latitude 10, compared to similarly priced Acer or Lenovo units, from a distance I tend towards Dell.
But of course there's no way around any Surface for me in addition.
But if the Dell is somewhat similar to my Latitude 10, I'll have to buy it as well.

When checking out the Acer W3, I did like the form factor and size. Maybe not as my sole Windows 8 tablet. But as a "special purpose" unit - great!

You want to stay away from the W3 by more than a continent.... The screen of that one is apparently horrible. They replaced it with the W4, which will have a much better screen. It also has a better processor. But the form factor is the same.

Most of it I can do on my Surface(s) Pro as well.
I really mainly use NVIDIA Shield and Surface Pro for the moment.
I rarely sell "old" gadgets.
Chromebook Pixel was one of the few exceptions. I found it too good to collect dust in my locker.
Oh okay, just wanted to know because I don't see you talking about it in your posts. I just recently bought one and I'm really loving it. It's so light and portable and the screen is simply stunning. It basically replaced my iPad 3

I love the form, that's why I had to buy it.
I'm not so much into the 4:3 ratio of Apple/Depple.
And for most uses, 7" is perfectly fine.
But:
I'm using tablets mainly on 2 occasions:
- On the sofa. For surfing, but my Surface Pro for work as well.
(Working for me often means lots of emails or simple reports. Those I easily can do on the sofa, instead of a home office).
- On the train and later in the hotel.
As I'm taking my Surface Pro with me anyway, I often don't take another unit with me anymore.
And on the sofa, there's not much need for lightweight or slim form.

But I totally agree:
Great tablet. And phantastic price.

mgmueller, since you own both the PW1 and PW2, do you think it's worth buying the PW2 if I already own the first gen.? Is the higher resolution really noticeable? What about speed (particularly page turns) and the built-in light? My first gen and only ereader is starting to slow down.

Not mgmueller, but I own both. Bought new for $119 and sold old to Amazon for $100, but not before I compared them. The battery is so much better than the old one- I do a lot of reading and had to charge the old one every night, the new one goes for several days before needing another charge. I was used to the screen on the old one, so the new one was much more noticeable - however, if I didn't have both to compare, I wouldn't really notice so much. Love the go to footnotes/next chapter feature - I would have gotten it for that alone. I guess it comes down to is it worth your money - for me, yes, but maybe not fore others.

Thanks for the reply. My Paperwhite lasts for about a month. Although I almost always enable Airplane Mode. I know about the footnotes but what's that chapter feature?

If you swipe up from the bottom, it puts the page you are reading in smaller type within a box. At the bottom is a slider bar that lets you go further into the book - even to the end, showing up in the box - you can then tap the box and go to whatever is showing up. I must admit with new authors, I usually read the end first to decide whether the book is worth reading

Having had to charge PW1 every night?
Seems extremely often.
Depends on the reading time of course.
I read usually between 2 and 5 hours per day. I've charged my PW1 about twice per week. So I'd assume about 12 hours of pure reading time on PW1, with light always on between 5% and 20% (most of the time 10% or less).
If you had to charge your PW1 almost very day, I'd guess:
a.) Reading time >>8 hours per day.
b.) Light very bright.
c.) Even considering a.) and b.), battery duration seems awfully low.

Comparing PW1 and PW2:
Page turn seems slightly snappier, but hardly noticeable.
Resolution is noticeable. But for me, that's similar as with iPads. Next to each other, you clearly see the difference. But on its own, each is fine.
Same here: If you want to check out the differences, you'll find them. To the advantage of PW2 obviously. But if you don't check next to each other, it's marginal in my opinion. Noticeable and certainly nice. But nothing "life-changing".
On my PW1, in the middle of the screen at the bottom there had been some minor "clouding". You kind of saw the lights. Not really distracting in my opinion, but when looking for it noticeable. I don't see anything like that on PW2. Might be coincidence, though.
Meaning:
As a collector, I don't regret of course having bought it and replacing my PW1 (I've sold it already, compared to the PW1 of a friend). But in my opinion, it's a minor evolution, no quantum leap. No urgent reason to replace PW1.

How does your PW1 slow down? I didn't have any such problems with my PW1.

I definitely keep my light too bright, but it is more comfortable that way and am reading probably 6 hours per day - but, you're right - the battery wasn't all that good. Of course I never noticed it until I got the new one.

One thing, I camp a lot and it was often charged through the 12 volt system. I wonder if that affected the battery! I'll find out in Jan when I go camping again.
