That's doubly irritating if you're trying to watch a show without disturbing others who may not be interested in the show. Turn the volume high enough to hear the dialog, sit back, begin to enjoy the show, and suddenly out of nowhere it seems there's a major orchestra right there in the room with you and people telling you to turn the volume down. You do, and the dialog returns, only now you can't hear it and need to turn the volume up again. Ridiculous.

Another pet peeve is music playing during already difficult to understand mumbled and whispered dialog. I used to think the mumbling and whispering was some kind of trendy style of which the point escaped me. Now I suspect it's just a cover for bad writing. One of the reasons I prefer to watch old movies and TV shows these days when I watch at all is because you could at least hear and understand what the actors were saying.

I had just finally got use to the beautiful regulation that commercials were at the same volume as the program I was watching. Now it seems like there are more and more periods of no dialog in TV programs just so the music can be played loudly. It's beginning to feel like advertising for the music track. Plus, the higher volume of the music requires a quick grab for the remote to turn it down. Then, when the music is over, you have to turn the volume back up to be able to hear the dialog once again!

Although commercials have had to lower their volume, I am starting to note that some commercials have started to be louder again. Has anyone else noted this in the US?
The commercials in my e-books aren't a bit louder than the dialog, and the music tack stays at whatever I set it to.

I blame Christopher Nolan and the absolutely unhearable, incomprehensible Batman "rasp." Ridiculous. The whole "mumble" thing is either the result of the lack of proper stage training for the actors or it's like the fast-cuts trend--let's hide the crappiness of the set by doing fast-cuts to simulate movement and suspense in this scene.

Bollocks to both.

It's great to know that I am not the only one with the same rant. I was beginning to worry that my hearing was getting bad when I was having trouble hearing the dialog over the background music. I may have to start using the CC option on some programs that I really want to watch. Are there really that many people out there that truly have no problem hearing the dialog over the background sounds that editors continue to do this?

It could be worse, we could always discuss eating you.

Last night for dinner I had crock pot pulled chicken. Yummy and easy. 6 frozen chicken breast, a 12 ounce bottle of BBQ sauce, 1/4 cup of Italian dressing, and 2 tbsp of worstecheshire (yes I butchered the spelling) sauce. Four hours on high in the crock pot and life was good.

It bugs me that many dogs seem unable to grasp the concept of neighbor. Let alone "neighbor who doesn't think he should have to 'get to know' you in order for you to quit freakin' barking outrageously each and every time you see him."

That is all.

+50.

In a former life, before we moved out of the city and into what is, for our neck of the woods, a very rural environment (minimum 1.25 acre lots, all uniquely-built homes, etc.), we suffered through a time when we had a guy across the street (kitty-corner to us) who had a dog that barked more than 2700 times per hour. This went on for hours every day, sometimes 8-10 hours, until the "guy" would get home. Day-in, day-out. The City decided that they weren't going to enforce the noise ordinance about "dogs," at about the same time, and this went on for YEARS. This was a nice, relatively upscale suburban environment. This asshat was the Prez of the HOA, so he simply ignored every complaint I filed. It's the closest I came to seriously considering harming an animal.

Finally, I recorded the dog. I kept a noise diary. I put together everything over the course of several weeks, and then I went to the HOA meeting with a legal complaint already drawn up, for having ignored over 21 complaints to them over a 3-year period. Told them that not only would I sue the Association, but I'd sue each one of them personally for breaching their fiduciary and legal duties to all residents--me included. I played the recording at full sound, and made them sit there for an hour and listen to it. Somehow, magically, that made them decide to do something about it.

Before this? I used to love dogs. Had dogs most of my life, although not at this time. Now? I loathe dogs. Positively loathe them. Hearing a dog start barking practically gives me a nervous tic. That's what listening to over 20,000 barks a day will do to you.

You know what slays me? If you stood out in your yard and barked 2700/hour, the cops would come and cite you. No hesitation--disturbing the peace, and if you kept it up, you'd be more than cited, eventually you'd be defying a bench order and you'd be jailed. A dog does it? "Oh, it's just a dog. A dog doesn't know any better." No, that's right--its owner does. Even where we live now, people just let their dogs outside (assuming that they had them in at night to begin with) at 5:00 a.m., and if the dogs bark and bark at coyotes and such, "oh, well." Utterly and thoroughly inconsiderate, and EVERY dog owner you meet thinks that that isn't THEM, of course. How would they know? They leave their houses and leave you at the mercy of the damned dog. And god forbid that they TRAIN them, or better yet, EXERCISE them so the poor mutt isn't neurotic. That would take effort--so of course, THAT ain't gonna happen.

</rant>

Not suggesting that it's right or wrong, but here in Thailand when that happens, the dogs don't live very long. It's amazing how many people have complained loudly about their dogs being poisoned after not listening to complaints about how their dogs were bothering the neighbors.
