I had this happen once and solved by factory reset, then only way I could get reader to start was without external SD card. I then had to reformat SD card then load books in small batches from Calibre.

Another time I had corrupted hard drive. I had a windows utility repair the hard drive file system with no loss of data on the hard drive.

When this happens to me, it's usually close to a firmware release so I've always thought it was because the servers were busy/highly solicited.

Any idea how I can get this thing functional again?
It means the database on the device has become corrupted. From where the error is detected in the code and your listed device, I think you have either the original reader or a WiFi. Unless you have a backup of this, I think the only thing you can do is a factory reset.
