I got the Nook first (I liked the dual e-ink/LCD screen setup and the DRM scheme better). Then I got a ST upgrade and then a ST with glow (presents from the wife). Had a Nook Color running CM7 back when everyone else's tablets cost like $400...everyone would ask if it was an iPad.
![]() Still prefer epub. I like to fix typos and such so Sigil is handy for editing epubs. ![]() My wife has had a few Kindles though and I buy a Kindle book once in a while (then strip the DRM and put in my Calibre and on my Nook) . |

I have never not owned a Kindle (since 2008, anyhow). A better question might be, what have I not owned?

I've never owned a Kindle. I had a Palm and a Newton back in the day, and now I'm on my second Kobo. I chose Kobo over Kindle mostly because I'm a fontmonster, with a few other bits and pieces of reasons thrown in.

Have never owned a Kindle I guess for the same reason as others that I just don't like being locked into buying books only from one place and in one format. I buy a lot of things from Amazon, but a Kindle is not one of them. I have had a Nook first gen and now use a Kobo Mini.

I got a Sony 505 first but after I'd bought about six ebooks from UK ebook shops, they stopped selling to anyone not in the UK.
So there I was, with my lovely new reader and not a single book to buy for it - at the time, no other epub shop (outside Baen, I guess, but I wasn't and still am not interested in their books) would sell anything to me. I wasn't that keen on only pirating books (although for a while it was pretty much the only option there was, outside reading fanfic on my shiny new Sony). Amazon was just in the process of opening up their ebook sales globally though, and the Kindle 3 had just come out, they were willing to sell it to me. So a Kindle 3 it was. It wasn't long after that first Books On Board and later Kobo become available to me, and by then I'd discovered how to cleanse books from DRM, and how to use Calibre, so formats are of no concern to me any more. I'm not tied to the Kindle - although I have a 1st generation Paperwhite now as I was tempted by the frontlight and there were no other reasonable options at the time - but as long as they make readers of comparable or better quality and features than everyone else (that is available to me), I can't see why I should not stay with a Kindle. I buy maybe half my books on Amazon these days - well, more again now that BooksOnBoard is no more - and keep everything I buy cleaned from DRM and backed up, and conversion, if needed, would take only moments. And Kindle offers something to me that I don't think others do - the Send to Kindle PC application which means I don't need to fumble around with the cable daily or weekly to sideload books, and I can choose to keep them on the Amazon cloud. It's a small convenience, and using a cable to sideload wouldn't exactly kill me (I've done so before after all), but it's a convenience I like and I'm glad Amazon lets me send, wirelessly, hundreds of books bought elsewhere to my Kindle and keep them on the Amazon cloud without any issues. ![]() |

Never owned a Kindle. I wasn't specifically researching, but I had been keeping up with developments in the field, and we got Dad a Kindle for Christmas a few years ago.
Still, I wasn't moved to buy an ereader until I stumbled on the Jetbook. It's still doing everything I need -- except PDFs and comics. I've got tablets for them. |

I never had a kindle, I hated how the first two implementations of the keyboard version looked. My husband on the other hand had the third incarnation of the keyboard version and the first of the touch (his current).

I started with a Sony 505 that was gifted to me by my son in 2008. He had thought of a Kindle, but was next to someone, on a flight, that convinced him to get me the Sony instead. I loved it and used it well for over 4 years.
I picked up a Black Friday 2011 special of a KK3 then I was again gifted a KFire by my son in 2011. I happily started downloading amazon freebies (and continue to do so). I switched back and forth using the Sony and the Kindles, but purchased only DRM free books. I still love the build and feel of the 505, but it has lost out to my KFire as I can read my DRM'd epubs on the KFire. Now, my favorite reader is the KFire and I use the KK3 in bright sunlight. |

I wanted a reader. The kindles are IMHO not. They are just portable amazon shops.

Have three, 2 x keyboard and a K4NT. Bought the K3 as an upgrade to my Astak pocket pro, then the wife wanted a K3. Last year there was a run out from Woolworths (here in Australia) of the Kindle NT, so bought that for $69.95 with the Amazon case.
I also have a Kobo Mini ($49 hell yeah!!). My thinking is the devices are not that expensive, and the money I saved by shopping between Amazon and Kobo (plus with the discounts) I am in the long run financially better off. I like the stability of the Kindle and Amazon's CS, but I like some of the reading customisation of the Kobo (and the good work done by those who contribute to the Calibre plugin). |

I'd have been perfectly happy using my kindle and not knowing about this place if I hadn't wanted a horse in both races and decided to get the kobo touch for epubs. ![]() |

I remember when I first came onto this site, I must have stumbled into an anti-Amazon thread and was "convinced" to get a Nook Color. Since I really had no idea what I was getting into, I thought I was being a rebel and brought it. I moved to a Sony T1 because it was lighter than the Nook Color. I finally ventured over to Kindle and bought a PW 1 and have also bought the PW 2. I love the readers and also how easy it is to purchase ebooks and deal with Amazon CS. To have full disclosure, I also have purchased a Kobo Mini and Aura HD. They are very good devices, but the Amazon experience is better than the Kobo experience in my opinion.

I have never owned a kindle purely because in the UK you cannot borrow library books onto a kindle and you can with a kobo...
