There is a thread discussing the 2.10.0 firmware. Read that to see the changes people have found. And if you have seen screenshots or used 2.9.0, there isn't much difference.

Two ways to do this:
first, change the value in .kobo/affiliate.conf to Mondadori

second, if you dare trust a stranger thought the interwebs, you might try to download the firmware+md5sum file from here:

DO IT AT YOUR RISK! As I'm an unknown stranger who might have modified the firmware do do my bidding!

I used the method of changing the affiliate to Mondadori. Not that i don't trust you, it just seemed simpler. It worked as you said.

I noticed however that once it booted the splash screen displayed a Mondadori logo, does that mean that Kobo rolls out slightly different firmwares for different affiliates or is that image in all firmwares but it reads .kobo/affiliate.conf to determine which splash screen to show?

From various reports, it seems the boot and sleep screens depend on the affiliate. Some affiliates (FNAC, for one) display their logo on the sleep screen with no option to display the book covers.
