Never owned a Kindle, don't want to faff about converting epubs. I like Amazon though.

No Kindle for me. I wanted epub and I wanted an SD slot. But the real deal breaker came when I looked at one in a store and saw the annoying page flash.

I've owed two eink readers. The first was the original Nook. I chose it because I could borrow library books. Time passes and my daughter gets a Kindle PW1. I loved the light! Then, my libraries start loaning in Kindle format. Next think I know, I am reading on a PW1! I gave my original Nook away and it's still being well used and loved.

I have only had one tablet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. I see no advantage to a Fire unless you want to watch Prime videos on it. Otherwise, from all I have read, an unrestricted Android tablet is a better fit for me.

No Kindles here. Because 1) the early Kindles were positively fugly, 2) I would never even consider buying a media device without an expansion slot and 3) I do my level best never to support proprietary formats and walled gardens.

I could have said I've never owned a Kindle up until about a month ago. My first e-ink device was the Sony 505--then I went to the Nook Classic. Came back to the Sonys when the 650 came out. Thought I'd never own a Kindle, but really wanted a reader with a built in light. Was hoping that Sony would step up to the plate and release one with a light, but was disappointed. I waffled between a new KPW2 and the Kobo Aura/Aura HD. What decided it was a $180 gift card I received for Amazon. I love my KPW2--Calibre made it easy to convert my library to Amazon format and I know I'll be able to convert future non-Amazon ebooks as well. So far I'm happy with my decision--but am in no way tied to the Amazon ecosystem.

My first reader was a kindle. It's always worked perfectly, Amazon have the best store, and I'm still very happy with it.

I started out with a Sony 505, that was a pain to use so I got the Irex 800. Great device, but after a year or so the screen took a turn for the worse and the battery life sucked from the start. So I got a Kindle DXG when they were on sale since I couldn't see myself going back to a 6" device. But the DXG was overkill, just too big and heavy. I recently sold it and got a Kobo Aura HD. Before getting the Kobo I bought almost all my books on Amazon, but with the coupon codes the Kobo store offers better deals now (most of the time). In general I like to support Amazon, a company that treats its customers right --- I wish all companies worked like them. If they had a 7" or 8" Kindle PW2 I would have bought one without hesitation. Converting epubs is not really an issue for me, I run everything through Calibre, anyway. They all try to tie you into their eco-systems, that is just a solid business practice. Amazon is just ahead of the game in using their own DRM system which saves them from having to pay big bucks to Adobe. Nothing sinister about that, especially since they control more than half the market, so Amazon is actually the standard, not epub.

When the first Kindles came out, I had already purchased over a thousand books at Fictionwise, and not being able to sideload everything to a sd card was a deal-breaker. Even though I currently buy some ebooks from Amazon and convert them to epub, I'll never get a Kindle because I value the ability to keep my entire library on my reader regardless of my wifi status. I was really disappointed with B&N's decision to drop the SD card on their newest Nook.

Of course the first Kindle had a card slot.

Kindle? It's the only ereader I've ever owned. I used a Sony before that.

Why Kindle? Because books and devices are so readily available, and it has great customer service.

I have never had a Kindle. I got my first Sony 600 in 2010 after doing my research on here about my different options. I chose Sony for the flexibility of being able to shop at any store that sold epubs

I entered the e-ink reader market with the Sony 505, it had a proprietary format then, LRF. Not too long after I sat next to a guy on the plane who showed me how easy it was to buy a book on his Kindle while we waited for the door to close - less than a minute. My first thought was "Rats!" Then I justified my purchase with thinking how classy the Sony looked next to the Kindle, but I really liked the functionality of the Kindle.

When the Kindle 3g came out, I jumped into the water. With Calibre, my Sony LRF purchases, Fictionwise purchases, etc. all work on my Kindle. I don't need an SD card because a 100 - 400 books on the Kindle is sufficient for me even when traveling (unless I'm gone for a year).

Amazon's Kindle Fire is another matter. I bought the original one, but I will not get another-don't hate it, but am not enamoured as I am with the e-ink ones.

Are we still doing the Amazon Monopolist meme?

Wasn't that the alibi that the BPH's and Apple used and was firmly squashed during their losing trial?

Can we please let that die?

I've owned and used Nooks and Kindles. Prefer the Kindle. Firmly invested in the ecosystem.

I've never owned a Kindle. The DRM and format is a big turnoff for me. Also in the beginning it just looked ridiculous with that stupid keyboard. Back when Sony was leading the way innovation wise I got a PRS 650 which had a touch screen (I stated with an ectaco device). After that I moved onto the Aura HD and I'll soon have an Aura. Kindles have a lot of positives but they're not enough to make me want to switch over.

I've never owned a Kindle just because I didn't like that it was so locked into one format.

I have nothing against Amazon; I get a lot of stuff from there. I also buy Kindle books and strip the DRM so that I can convert it to epub for my other readers. I've got Kindle apps on my Nooks but I normally don't use them because their functionality is too limited for me.
