I did finish Kindred and I found it to be excellent. I read it for a bookclub I'm unable to go to for that meeting. But it was still well worth reading.

Every once in a while we find a book that's more then just something to read to escape life. This is one of those sorts of books.

Just finished "The Listerdale Mystery" by Agatha Christie, originally published in 1934. This is a short story collection, and I enjoyed it very much. All the stories are mysteries, and some have very surprising endings. A good collection.

Harry, have you read Poirot Investigates? It's also a collection of short stories. I was going to read it but I thought I'd read The Murder of Roger Ackroyd first. Anyway, are the stories any good?

Yes, I have read it. I'm currently reading all of Agatha Christie's non-romance books in publication order. "Poirot Investigates" was her first book of short stories, published in 1924. It's an enjoyable collection of short stories.

A "locked door" mystery that was very well done. The resolution was surprising and plausible, to a certain degree. Carr uses a few of my least favorite plot methods but it's to be expected in these types of "no-holes-barred" mysteries. Rated C+ [3 stars].

Next is a recent purchase. The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi.

I just finished Scarlet, second book in the King Raven trilogy, by Stephen R. Lawhead. It was a good read, it ended on a cliffhanger, which I normally hate, so I need to read the final book soon.

I've also finished Mrs. Hudson's Case by Laurie King, a short story in her Mary Russell series. Not even 20 pages long but entertaining enough.

I'm about to start the 11th book in the Merrily Watkins series by Phil Rickman, the twelfth book is set to be released on Thursday but I'm going to try and save it until my vacation next week.

Good to know that you've been enjoying the short stories. I love Agatha Christie's novels but I've been kind of reluctant about reading her short story collections.

I just finished Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor by Matt Stover. It was a decent, stand-alone novel that takes place shortly after Return of the Jedi.

Now starting the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb with Assassin's Apprentice.

The King Raven trilogy is available as an omnibus at my library, so I will probably be reading it soon, good to hear that it is a good read.

She wrote some excellent short stories. Others not so good, of course. But well worth reading, overall.

I'm reading William Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich in e-book form. It's a long but rewarding read if you, like me, are interested in World War II. The e-book conversion isn't very good. There are a fair amount of typos ("1" instead of the letter "I" in particular) and also asterisks that suggest missing or unlinked footnotes. Nonetheless the text is quite readable.

I do have a paperback reprint of the 30th anniversary edition (not 50th), so I could compare the Kindle version for footnotes but I haven't thus far.

I'm thinking of reading Shirer's Berlin Diary to complement this work.

I finished With the Lightnings by David Drake. It didn't take too long to get interested in the story and the characters. I will definitely be reading more of this series since I have the first 5 or 6 books from the Baen CD's.

Next up, I am going to read my signed copy of The Crown Tower by Michael J. Sullivan. (won it in a contest) Yes, a paper book. At least it's a nice trade paperback with decently sized print. I think I can manage it.
