Not a very good idea in my opinion.
I believe that Toyota's new system is meant to "ignore" internal music, and not try to cancel that, and only focus on cancelling engine and road noise. It is possible (probable?) that it also "ignores" sirens, allowing them to come through loud and clear. Perhaps it's similar to some noise-cancelling headphones which don't fully cancel speech, so that you can hear, for instance, the hostie on the plane asking you if you'd like another gin-and-tonic (asking for a "Zany Carter" gets you suspicious looks - not recommended ), but you can only barely hear the roar of the jets.

Cheers,
Marc

Well, the ads show all sorts of noise (like jackhammers and crap) all around the car ... but you can't hear them "in" the car because the car is sooooo quiet inside. So ... that makes me think it's something different.

And ... whatever that different thing is, it just strikes me as not so good.

And, Zeep ... KITTEN LUST .... I HAZ IT!!

I don't know the ad', so I'm not sure what car it relates to. If it is the Toyota, then I believe it is simply the usual "antiphase" active noise cancellation as used in noise-cancelling headphones, but built for the car:

http://www.themotorreport.com.au/592...-crown-hybrid/

Its ability to "ignore" music inside the car could/may be adapted to other distinctive noises as well - jackhammers may occupy a frequency that can be cancelled, while sirens may occupy another frequency that the system might be built to ignore. I've tried to find more info on the Honda/Acura active noise cancellation system as well, which has been around for some years, but with no success (though I believe it is a Bose product, and the Bose headphones "ignore" speech and sirens, so that's possibly/likely applicable in the Honda/Acura models).

Cheers,
Marc

I don't think it was Toyota, but I'll try to pay more attention the next time I see it. I do remember that the emphasis was on not hearing any "outside" noise. In one ad, they had a bazillion clocks (coo coo and otherwise) clanging and coo cooing away outside the car, but you don't hear anything inside the car. The car isn't moving ... so it's not a matter of canceling out engine noise. I'll just have to see if I can remember what car it is and if they have the ads online

Anyway .... I just came in from outside (took the trash out) and it was amazing out there. Totally clear directly overhead ... tons of stars ... but to the Northwest, a HUGE thunderstorm with a great light show. Then, to top it off, as I'm watching the lightning, a meteor streaks overhead and breaks up in the atmosphere. It was very bright and a distinct orange-yellow color. Really beautiful.

I suppose there's one other factor that we've both studiously avoided mentioning: truth in advertising.

For me, a "falling star" is one of the most special things to see (though I love thunderstorms as well, which we should start to get again soon). I hadn't seen any for years, other than a couple of minor streaks out in the bush at Oberon when we lived down south, but coming here we have seen two large "break-ups", one while driving at night along the Noosa-Eumundi road, coming home towards Noosa, and another at late-twilight over the sea, watched from the boardwalk on Main Beach. "Really beautiful" indeed. Did you make a wish?

Cheers,
Marc

Truth in advertising ... an oxymoron if I've ever heard one.

No ... it was just so gorgeous and unexpected, I completely forgot about the wish making part. I've seen meteor showers before, but never an individual one this close.

Wow! Sounds like you had a wish for a breathtaking moment answered on credit.

Do the noise cancellation headphones work on noise generated by shums? They don't block the adorable little mewing sounds made by cute kittens, do they?
