Yup, with all the photo work you do, 64 bit systems will be useful. It's overkill for most of us. |

I took the plunge. I ordered a tower loaded with an Intel i7 cpu, 16gig, solid state main C drive for the operating system, plus a 1-terabyte D drive, a graphics board with an extra 4gig, 8 USB ports, 4 of them USB3 for my external drives, two DVD writers, and a water-cooled heat exchanger over the cpu, etc., etc. I figure it should be powerful enough to run a small Third World country... All this just so I can play 'Angry Birds!'

No... Win 7. I only switched to this a few months ago from XPpro. While Win 8.1 might be a bit faster for some applications, for me, the difference would only amount to milliseconds. 32bit with 4gig with an Intel i5 was actually fast enough to suit me. Moving to 64bit and 16gig with an Intel i7... I won't even have time to sneeze! So far, Win 7 has been stable enough. Maybe in a year or two I'll try Win8.

I agree.. Windows 7 has been ultra stable for me and I have no interest in the look and feel of Windows 8.

Many of the upgrade improvements to software and OS's tend to be aimed at the corporate user's needs. Business teams needing better sharing systems, office paper production re client information, etc. I'm just a little guy, semi-retired because I enjoy the work, sitting in my room fixing a photo or 20 every few weeks to send to my editors, only taking assignments when they look like something I'd enjoy. I'm usually not dealing with deadlines these days, nor need to get 500 proofs to a graphics editor before press time. I can afford to go slowly.

From the start of the Windows Welcome screen on boot-up to ready.... 9 seconds. From completely off to ready, even with four large external drives... 22 seconds.
From mouse click on the Firefox icon to home page... I can't tell you. It's faster than I can hit the button on my stopwatch. This is simply unbelievable. I've been sitting here giggling... Stitchawl |

I made a mistake...
It's not "From the start of the Windows Welcome screen on boot-up to ready.... 9 seconds." That should have read 'from the press of the power button to ready.' From the Welcome screen to ready was less than 3 seconds. It's the unspoken corollary to this that is the real rant; I no longer have time to go to pee between starting the computer and boot-up. ![]() Stitchawl |
