The Nook HD+ has a 1.5 ratio. As far as I know no other tablet has that ratio.

Still, to each his own.
I don't; I'm referring to hardware features. I've yet to encounter an Android app that didn't scale properly for either my Nexus 4 or Nexus 7.2; and I use the same apps for both devices.

Upscaling to a 7-inch tablet, or faking a tablet app there, is not as difficult as making a true tablet app for a 10-inch tablet. It's 10-inch tablets especially where iOS crushes Android.

"true tablet" apps mean nothing to me.

It doesn't take a couple of things into consideration, though.
  1. The tablet market has grown. The iPad's market share has decreased because there are a lot of people buying tablets now. However, majority of Android sales are probably for $150-200 tablets with very low profit margins. That's okay for Google. They just want to sell as many Android devices as possible so they can get ad revenue. Apple, meanwhile, is still primarily a hardware company so I doubt they'd be happy with just $10-50 margins. I don't know about you but I'd rather sell 10 million devices at $150 profit than 20 million devices at just $50 profit.
  2. The release of new iPads changed from spring to fall. Traditionally, sales slow down a quarter before release so I'm guessing that's just what we're seeing now.

I love that the iPad 2 is still being sold and still at a premium

Question

Mind-boggling, that one. Consumers paying $400 for an almost 3-year-old tablet must be literally clueless. But, perhaps Apple's market research determined there are sufficient amounts of clueless consumers who will go along with this.

I love it how everyone looks with condescencion at the so-called "education sector", as if outdated, overpriced tablets were exactly what financially struggling schools were clamoring for. If schools really wish to save money as their first priority, they will likely purchase 2 Android tablets for the price of 1 iPad. Also, I find it significant that Android has been offering user profiles since version 4.2 -- an extremely useful feature particularly for educational use -- whereas there's not even a whisper of a rumour about an equivalent feature on iOS.

There is also the speculation that there are some systems (e.g. Point of Sale systems built for iPad) that require a 30-pin connector and iPad 2/3/4-style enclosures. I think it's plausible.

Or perhaps they just have preferences that differ from yours?

iPad 3 would be the perfect fit there. And the $400 price tag for an early 2012 iPad could be considered reasonable. If you say, "points of sales don't need Retina," that may be true, but in that case, the price really seems out of bounds.

Such as? I have a fairly vivid imagination, but can't imagine a reason for buying an early 2011 tablet in 2013-4 for a 2012 price. The only realistic scenario I can come up with for someone buying an iPad 2 in October 2013 or later at $399, is that person not clearly realising what it is they are buying.

All I mean is that you (and I) may think it overpriced, but the buyer may well have a perfectly valid reason for their purchase.

Right... all I'm saying is I can't imagine a rational reason. I'd be happy to hear if someone can name one.

Not sure if you'd consider this to be a rational reason...but we bought an iPad 2 for my Mother In Law last Christmas. Both my husband and I have iPads--I have an iPad 2 and he has the original first gen iPad. We wanted to get something for her that would work with the accessories we have and that both of us would be familiar with--since we'd be helping her set it up and use it. (She is technology challenged to put it mildly.) It didn't make sense to pay more for a more up to date iPad for her. She uses it to play some games on, check her e-mail and do some light web surfing.

Thank you, dordale. Well, at least that is last Christmas, when iPad 2 was only 1.5 years old. I wonder if many people will consider the same device a full year later for this year's Christmas, for the unchanged price.

If I met someone considering to buy an iPad as a Christmas present this year, I would advise them to definitely add the $100 and buy iPad Air instead. Particularly if it was a gift for someone who is not a teenager; to me, it's not a question of advanced technology per se, but the incomparably crisper Retina screen is something that users on all levels of expertise will appreciate. It's a boon for their eyesight. Today you also get much reduced size and weight in iPad Air -- and to throw all of that away just to save $100 would seem ill-advised. (Alternatively, the latest iPad mini costs exactly the same, $399; but the larger screen may be more appreciated especially by users whose eyesight may not be optimal.)

The irony here is that Apple poses itself as a "luxury brand", yet it is going to sell a 10-inch tablet into 2014 for an extremely high price of $400, sporting a screen resolution (1024 * 768 pixels) that even the cheapest Chinese knock-off manufacturer would blush to be offering nowadays, especially at such a seemingly insane price point.
