Ditto on user-chosen fonts & line spacing -- he would need a sample to work with.
Attached 2 epubs to test: font and line spacing locked.

For the epub that start from page 1, I could not find any, sorry.
But the Kobo's .epub renderer (not the kepub.epub) is starting at the very first table of content entry. Maybe he can force it to always start from page 1 ?

He probably should look at what happens when opening a book that has been been read and finished. When you reopen a finished book, it always opens on the first page/cover. This isn't the same with a book you mark as finished. These should open at the spot you were up to when you did this.

@byblo, passed your files on.
@dafidfor, I think we were talking about opening a book for the first time, not re-opening.

Thank you

Also, davidfor's advice is a very interesting way to find out how to force the default reader app to open a new book at the very first page. Could you please transmit it too to?

I'm perfectly happy to do so but not till I have a book for him to test with

Sorry but I'm not sure to understand.
All epub have a TOC usually. Any epub can be used to debug this request.
Unless you want me to send you a epub with its TOC entries removed? But I don't see how it can help.

I don't know if Metazoa has any "real" epubs. For all I know he's only reading FB2 files converted to epub, which may or may not exhibit this behavior.

I think I'm confused about what your request is. I've just opened a couple of books that I've never opened before and they both opened on the cover page (page 1). Is this the behavior you're asking for?

If the epub has a table of contents file (toc.ncx) with navigation entries, the first time you open the ebook, it will open at the first entry in the toc.ncx file. After you finish the book and then re-open it, it will open at the first file which very often contains the cover image.

If the toc.ncx file does not have navigation entries, the ebook will open the first time at the first file.

As near as I can tell, Kobo's ereaders only use the toc.ncx file for displaying the table of contents. A table of contents embedded in an .xhtml file is not used other than by manually navigating to that page and selecting an entry.

Regards,
David

David, thanks for explaining. So near as I can tell Metazoa would need an EPUB with the toc.ncx where the first playpoint is not set to be the cover page (as they are doing in the epubs I've tried).

I've attached two samples here. The version with no toc in the file name will open on the cover page while the other will open on the first page of the story after the Gutenberg information. The second one will also display the table of contents since it has more than 1 entry.

Regards,
David

But, he also needs to consider the reading status of the book. This is stored in the database for the book.

- Unread - ReadStatus=0 - Open to first TOC entry
- Reading - ReadStatus=1 - Open using reading position stored in database
- Finished - ReadStatus=2 - Open to first page of the book.

That is why I suggested looking at the path for opening a finished book. As there is already an execution path that will do what is desired, finding a way to use that would solve the problem.
