First of all Dr. Seuss. I loved his books when I was little and drove my mother crazy with them (she had to read them to me before I learned how to read) then others like A.C. Doyle, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Isaac Asimov just to name a few.

Virgil, Shakespeare and Dante, in that order. I didn't discover Camus and Sartre until my teens.

When I was just starting to read "grown-up" books, it was probably Jack London- most notably The Sea Wolf. Besides that, probably A Tale of Two Cities by Dickens, the short stories of O. Henry and the poems of Robert Frost.

Who killed Cock Robin inspired me to learn to read and "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson is still a poem I feel emotional about.
Gormenghast might have been my first fantasy book or maybe not.

Jules Verne and Joseph Altsheler are two that made a big impression when I was young (5th grade).

A lot of books in this thread that I remember reading - Encyclopedia Brown, The Hardy Boys, The Three Investigators, the old "you were there" historical novel series and then as I got a bit older, I moved up to the adult books (had to get special permission to browse the adult section of the library), but the two previous authors probably made the biggest impression. Verne was my gateway into SF, although Alexander Key also helped open that door. Altsheler started a life long fascination in the American Civil War in specific and history in general.
