Then again, my main format is EPUB; I don't really care if Calibre completely mangles the AZW3 and how it looks inside, as long as it works as expected. If I need a different format later on, I'll just reconvert. |

IMO, it would make more sense for the PW2 to count how many PW2 screens of text are in a chapter/book. That way you would get a better feel for how long you have left to read. I understand using page numbers associated with the printed version of the book if they are available, but when they are not it makes little to no sense to use arbitrary page numbers that represent x.y number of screens of text. I understand of course that calibre cannot predict how many screens of text will be required on an eInk device because each device is different and each person can set the text size. But the PW2 should be able to easily determine how many screens of text are in a chapter/book based on the user's current settings and give a proper number of how many are left. I can predict how long it takes to read one screen of text, but predicting a page based on say 3.4 screens of text is not going to happen.

To clarify, it's not the PW that's generating the "made up" page numbers, but Calibre. If there isn't a page map file (a file with a ".apnx" extension) present, the PW won't display any page numbers at all.
Paginating a book as you describe would be a reasonably lengthy process, which would need to be re-done whenever the user changed the text size or the font. |

My timer goes wrong when I read on other devices. Like I'll read a book on my PW, then I switch on my ipad - when I sync pages back, the 'time left' becomes very short. It's like it thinks I read those pages really fast - when they got sync'd.

Be sure to report the issue to Amazon so it can be fixed! I've never had an issue on my PW1 so it's a new bug.

I still like the progress bar across the bottom of the K3 screen better than any of the progress schemes Amazon has come up with for the PWs. It was simple, elegant, spot on, and useful.

Not me I love time left to read. I am lost without it. The gauge doesn't tell me enough when I read on my K4. I need to know how much time is left in this chapter and how much time is left in the book. It one of the best feature Amazon has ever come up with for a Kindle.

Though as Blossom's contrary opinion clearly shows, there should be an option to switch between the two to keep us all happy. ![]() |

Display Options

1. Location in book. 2. Page in book. 3. Time left in Chapter. 4. Time left in book. I use "Time left in Chapter" and it is accurate to +/- five minutes which is just fine for me. It can never be 100% accurate since we get distractions while reading and our speed on each page could vary from other pages. Tapping the lower left hand corner rotates those options in sequence. If we have wide variations in page reading speed, it recalculates on its own. |

Everyone of my eBooks has those 4 options.

However, page numbers ARE available in all of them on the PW 2013. The firmware may have changed. Maybe the PW 2012 will get a firmware upgrade to match the PW 2013. |
