I added a bunch of what I would consider "classic" stuff that I've read over on Goodreads, but for the most part I don't really feel the need to post what I'm currently into. In fact, I'm finding myself getting more and more away from that (not just with books), and I went through Facebook a while back and deleted most of the "I like" stuff from my profile. I dunno, it just seems a little too big brother-ish for me, I guess I value my privacy as much as an average internet denizen can in this day and age.

I mean no offense by this, truly, I just find it to be a interesting difference in world view:
As I was reading that sentence, I was totally unprepared to read "big brother-ish" in that place.

The phrase I would have thought was coming was something along the lines of "overly exhibitionistic and narcissisticly self-indulgent."

The entire concept these so-called Social Networking sites seems to be people voluntarily broadcasting personal details to the world.

I don't really get that. Like your graphic, to me it does seem like TMI from the poster's side (and a lot of IDC* from my side), but in any case it seems almost the opposite of big-brotherish to me.

*IDC= I Don't Care.

Isn't there anyone else who is completely unsocial. I have no facebook, twitter or any other social network account and not the slightest intention of ever having one. If I need to talk to a friend or relative I'll call them and TALK to them. Or send them an email.
I don't talk to or give personal info to complete strangers. And if my only contact with them was via the computer they ARE strangers not friends.

A bit more little brotherish as you seem to imply. Like leave stuff out where big brother can find them and use them against you.

The poster is right in deleting anything personal though IMO.

Actual conversation going on beside me at traffic light yesterday.

"And he found my Facebook. "OMG I think he is stalking me"

"Delete your facebook"

"OMG I cant do that I have too many friends"

That's hilarious.
And there is a meta-message in that story to the effect of: Never mind the Internet, how about protecting your personal information while sitting at traffic lights!

Hey, that gives me an idea for the "first sentences" thread.

I wouldn't consider myself unsocial or antisocial, but aside from mobileread I participate in NONE of those social media sites whatsoever, and as you, have no intention or desire to ever do so. These days every person, place and thing in the world are constantly telling you that if you want to read or learn more about the news, the story, the product, or anything else that's going on, you need to follow them on facebook or twitter. I think not.

I'll shut up now. I get pretty wound up on that subject myself.

Back on topic about publishing what I'm reading ... no, I don't even think I mention what I'm reading here. I really have no profound reason why or why not.

Yes, that's certainly true. I guess I just meant big brother in an overarching sense (under constant surveillance, voluntarily divulging personal details to the state, etc...). But I know what you mean, and I certainly took no offense.

It can be hard to distinguish a hidden agenda of the sites from the agenda developed by the users of the sites. The pressure to broadcast personal details is extreme. If it's from the site then it's big brother-ish. If it's from the people using the sites then it's peer pressure. Either way I find it offensive. Obviously I'm not a Twit-and I'm only on Facebook because my kids are. (I still don't know what they find offensive about picking up the phone or emailing me, but it's pretty obvious that they find something offensive about it. Presumably they do read the emails I send them but the only way I know what they're doing is from Facebook. They're adults so it's their choice, but I really don't understand it. Or like it.)

I think many people see Facebook as a property or a possession. They refer to it as my Facebook, not my Facebook account etc. It appears to them as a little tract of land on the internet where they have the idea that they are in control. No different from phone or email contacts, except there is for some a perceived value in making you go to their Facebook page.
