Make sure you are coming from a full 2.8.1 install. Installing using the 2.9.0 KoboRoot.tgz over an earlier release probably won't work.

Yep, I did it from 2.8.1, and it worked like a dream. Yay, Pocket! The only downside I've noticed so far is a change in the tap zones. I've got it set so that the rightmost two-thirds page forward. On that setting, I used to be able to tap at the top (handy for the way I hold my device when side-lying), and it would page foward. Now, a tap anywhere along the top opens the menubars instead (like a tap in the middle bottom). That's suboptimal.

Well I just updated to 2.90 using only the tgz file and things are hunky dory! I came from 2.81. Pocket looks great!

Well I sort of agree. 9 windows of information would be more than enough for my needs. Those book covers are really pretty small.

I haven't had much time with the new firmware admittedly but it seems to work perfectly fine. Is there any reason why this has not been released to Aura HD users already other than "we want you to impatiently buy the Aura."?

I think there was an element of that happening when the Aura HD was released. But, I don't think that was the case here. I think the reason is bugs and finishing interfaces for the other device. I think the only reason 2.9.0 was released was they needed an update available when the Aura reached people.
