Need Full Download, not MSI

Cannot get MSI files to run on Win 8 x64. I have googled the problem on multiple occasions and *tried* to get msi service started but still msi files will not install and I have put this aside and come back for many months now.

I have not had Calibre for over 6 months now and getting tired of it.

Can I PLEASE have a link to the full program to download so I can install instead of the msi link on the web site.

I have tried the x64 version and the x86 version and an older version that I had archived. It's useless. msi is just NOT GOING TO RUN ON THIS MACHINE.

The MSI IS the full version! If your machine will not run MSI's then there is something fundamentally broken in your Windows installation. I run the MSI without problems on my Windows 8 x64 system.

Having said that you may find that you can run the portable version which is provided as self-extracting .exe file.

If MSI's will not run, you have a far larger issue than just calibre. This tends to imply that your entire Windows installation is damaged.

@Black Cat Linda as others have said if you can't install an MSI then you have a broken Windows.

Have you considered doing a reinstall-in-place of Win 8 - here is a procedure http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...ndows-8-a.html to do that. It has the advantage over the Win8 Refresh of not losing installed programs.

Or, your User Account Control (UAC) settings are too low to install software. If this is the case two routes exist:

If someone else is the Admin: You will need to speak to your Administrator (whoever that is) in order to have them update calibre. I would suggest letting the Admin know that calibre is updated every Friday, so that they're aware this is going to be a recurring issue.

If there is no one else as Admin: You might need to right click on Calibre's icon, Properties>Compatibility tab>Privilege Level>Run as Administrator>Apply>Okay.

As a former tech, I agree that msi's *should* run on the laptop and am stumped why they won't.

I may do a rebuild of this machine over the Winter.
However as a work-around, the idea to use the Portable version of Calibre is BRILLIANT and a very acceptable temporary solution.

In case not known Black Cat Linda; while too late for your current problem, but looking to the future, there is a tool (seemingly little known about) included with Windows 8 that makes and restores recovery images which includes everything that "Refresh" does as well as ones desktop applications. So, as long as one has created previously a recovery image (typically the image size is around 20-30GB, depending on size of applications), one can do a "refresh" without losing anything.

Here is not the place to get into detail, but googling "recimg.exe" will turn up how to run it from the command line.

Another possibility comes to mind - Windows 8.1 update will be released in a couple of days, that will probably do a complete refresh losing nothing, solving any problems emanating from your current installation.

Good point

The reason I didn't suggest Recimg was that people tend not to keep the image up to date, especially as more and more programs are implementing fast-and-furious update regimes, and some programs don't take kindly to leapfrogging over releases.

Install in place will preserve most of your 'classic' programs as is, IIRC Firefox is one of the few that it doesn't. But its a process rather than a One_Click (and your dead) fix

Yes I agree. The main reason I mentioned it was because the OP said they had been a "tech" so I assumed they would be at home with the command line, up and downsides, etc.

From my own usage point of view I like to keep an image or two anyway; but like many, as you say, I do not keep them up to date.

However, ordinarily, I run Secunia PSI from time to time, mainly to pick up and install all the updates for the applications on the PCs that don't automatically notify updates and which I have missed. It seems to do that reliably. So, for myself, I anticipate that if I ever had to restore an image Secunia should identify, download and install any updates not in the image, rather than having to hunt them out, download and install them myself.

I would still be short of any new applications installed since the image was made, so would have to reinstall those. But for my own case I have a pretty stable collection of applications so not really an issue for me. And the repair method does not restore Windows updates, it being reliant as to what is on the Windows install disc, which as time goes by means a large download and install of those. As far as I know, and I have had no need to test, recimg.exe does.

So pluses and minuses all around as to what to do.
