Five Black Dots

Hi All,
Switched on today, got the five square dots and nothing else. Used a paper clip to reset but kept getting the 5 dots.
Is there a cure please.
Regards.
Ron

Ps:- left the reader on the side, and when I came back in, the kobo was back to normal. I don't know why, but all is working again.
Ron

Keeping in mind that I don't have an Aura to try this on but you might want to try the following:

Plus your Aura in for a couple of hours to charge it.

Hold the power switch to the right covering the LED for 15-20 seconds to ensure it is turned off.

Let go of the power switch and wait a few seconds.

Press and hold the light switch.

Slide the power switch to turn the Aura on. Watch the LED and when it starts rapidly flashing, release the light switch.

You should now be factory resetting back to 2.8.0

Go through the usual setup and firmware update.

If the above doesn't trigger a factory reset, try holding the light switch while doing a pin hole reset. Again hold the light switch until the LED starts rapidly flashing.

Good luck!

Regards,
David

Thank you DNSB, useful advice for possible future use. All now working without me doing anything. I don't know why, but I'm a happy bunny again lol

Are you using an external SD card? There are reports of this causing long boot times.

One possibility that has given me long boot times was using an external SD card starting around firmware version 2.5.1. At one point with 2.5.1, I was beginning to think that my Aura HD was hung until I left it one evening and it had finished booting in the morning. The delay increased as I put more books on the card. The boot times have improved over the firmware versions from 2.5.1 and so far, 2.9.0 delays on the first boot after a factory reset but after that the delay is just a couple of seconds.

Regards,
David

I've also seen some fairly long delays on the restart after an upgrade even without an SD card in place.

This, at least on the Glo was soooo true. Sometimes I thought it had frozen or died and ended up doing a pinhole reset. Othertimes since I didn't have a paper clip to hand it would revive on its own. Considering the similarities in hardware I'm not surprised that most hiccups on the Glo are also present on the Aura HD.

It would be VERY helpful if they made an effort to display some sort of a heartbeat through any function requiring excessive time either onscreen or at least with the LED. It's my contention that as devices have gotten faster and faster user patience has gotten shorter and shorter -this is especially obvious when nothing appears to be happening during higher stress activities like firmware upgrades.

I don't think that patience has diminished that much. It's more as you say the lack of an indication if it's truly working. Back in the DOS days and such, even if the screen froze during long operations as files were copied and whatnot there was the light indicating hard drive activity (and the really loud noise of the drives from those days, ahh, childhood memories). But now I have actually seen laptops with no light indicator for hard drive activity (not often but when I do see them it bugs the hell out of me). Cell phones and tablets have nothing of the sort as is the case with ereaders.

Then we have pages that hang. When my friend first tried to buy the Aura for me (the option to buy doesn't appear where I am) the "processing" message would not disappear. We waited for overe fifteen minutes for it to process but no luck. And as web page operations are not local if it hangs there is no indication that nothing is happening (like the hard drive activity light or a task manager showing you that there is actual activity in the process you are concerned with).

So yeah, if they used the LED as a write/read indicator of the flash memory when updating firmware it'd be greatly appreciated (has anybody listed this on the feature request thread?)

I have fond memories of the heartbeat LED on IBM server motherboards. Along with the other error LEDs, they made it a lot easier to know when to hit the power switch and when to be patient.

With the aura HD if you hit the light button and it doesn't change state chances are it is doing something and will eventually finish.

I find this helpful when you select something and the icon goes black and nothing happens. Sometimes it is just taking a long time and sometimes it is simply ignoring the input. If the light changes state then I know that I have to try again
