Good photo illustrating the inconsistencies between PWs. There has been a lot of screen variations in both the PW1 and PW2. Some here at MR have posted photos showing screens with even greater yellow hues and very difficult to read text. You just never know what you will get when you open that little black box!

Hey, maybe Amazon should package their PW2s in a box with a see through front panel and a button to let you turn it on to examine the screen before you commit to buy it.

Tolerance for variances in individual PW units is a subjective opinion. I have noticed those unit variances in every type of device I have ever purchased from PC's to printers to cars to radios, etc.

A slight refresh on page turns may cause some to return their units and be barely noticeable to others. The same response happens with "pin" holes, background hues and "stuck pixels." Some folks return Monitors for a single stuck LCD pixel which may require a high magnifying photo lens to detect. I never even look for them.

You sound like a broken record...repeating the same thing over and over.

Since when did noticing dead pixels require a "high magnifying photo lens"?

Exaggerate much?

Hm; that right PW1 looks only so-so. My PW1 looks like the most left of the PW2's.

From customer perspective, it may be a good idea, but how are you going to adjust the light levels? How are you going to look at the screen in different lighting conditions?

Under normal reading conditions I find that battery drain is rather fast. I'm guessing here but I think I've read about 5 or 6 hours on my PW2 and it has drained half of the battery. I've only added 3 books to it so indexing shouldn't have been exhaustive, and I fully charged it before using it. I keep the light on from between 7 and 14 with 12 probably the level it is at most of the time. I do run WiFi continuously, but I've always done that on all my Kindles. I think the light is sucking the battery down rapidly. In my case it isn't that big of an issue as I can charge it up each night, but it might be for some people who travel a lot.

EDIT: Amazon claims, "A single charge can last up to eight weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at ten)..." That equals 28 hours at light level 10 with WiFi off. WiFi has never been a huge drain on any non-lighted Kindle I've owned, so I think the light is the culprit.

I ran an excel spreadsheet with separate reading session records for the Paperwhite 2012. Totals two full cycles averaged about 10 hours.

The PW 2013 in its first cycle shows 11 hours and my meter shows about 25% left. However, the meter may not be accurate on the first cycle. I will be running a second cycle of reading sessions as well.

Now, that is excellent effort. Much appreciated.

Suggestion: If you don't already, maybe record the approximate light level used in the sessions?

Negative, no way can these products feature as much difference as two Paperwhite displays.

I used a light level of 22 of 24 on the Paperwhite 2012 and I am using a level of 15 of 24 on the 2013 model.

A walk in test your Kindle Paperwhite environmental chamber is what's needed. A comfy chair, various light settings, and some drinks while I read and test if they really wanted to be nice.
