I'm using the GUI version 0.4.89 to create an ePUB file. When Chapter mark option "both" is selected, only the first chapter is marked with both a "page break" and a "rule" line. Each of the other 106 chapters of my book are marked with only the "rule" line (no page break).

I got the same results with both a large 107 chapter book and a very small 4 chapter test book. I opened a ticket with the small book attached.

I'm going through my converted books and have noticed a few things:

1. All books checked so far have a small font just a tad smaller than the "normal" small font with a lrf. Epubs from other sources don't exhibit this. Any way to bump this up from the command line?

2. On at least one entire series of books there's a double-space between paragraphs. This does not show up with the lrf versions.

3. One book thus far fails to load. It happens to be big (Clavell's Noble House) at 1100+ pages. It loads fine as a lrf and FBReader loads it (the epub) instantly. With the Reader it stalls on the cover image for about six minutes, then reboots. This book also took over 90 minutes to convert.

The next release of calibre will have the ability to set a base font size, just as for LRF files.

The LRF converter actually has code to remove inter-paragraph spacing by default. In html2epub you can try setting --override-css to p{margin:0pt; padding:0pt}

The splitting code also has some improvements, try Noble House again with the next release.

Didn't do the job. Still double-spaced between paras. Also, the converted epub was frozen on page 1, although I could force a jump to page 2. Did I enter the command incorrectly?

No that's fine. There's probably something else in the HTML that's causing the paragraph spacing. Post it and I'll take a look.

Not sure why it should be freezing on the first page, but when you post it mention that and I'll take a look at that as well.

I redid the conversion, this time on an html rather than an epub and it worked.

$ html2epub --override-css="p{margin:0pt; padding:0pt}" 01_dead_until_dark.html

However I did come across a new warning:

Too much markup. Re-splitting without structure preservation. This may cause incorrect rendering.

1) Support for specifying an absolute base font size
2) --level1-toc --level2-toc --from-ncx options for greater flexibility in TOC generation
3) Automatically remove inter-praragraph spacing by default
4) Make handling of covers and metadata more robust
5) Make splitting a little faster for very large files

1) needed a complete rewrite of the CSS handling code, so there may have been a few regressions introduced.

0.4.90 should hit the servers in about an hour. Enjoy.

Hi Kovid,

Using 4.90: Ubuntu 8.04.1 - generic installer

1 epub2epub is not present.
2. any2epub --title= toggle is not working
3. epub-meta --title= toggle not working
4. Default para space removal: working
5. Base font size selection: working
6. epub-meta/any2epub --author= toggle not working

7. Weirdness -- on the one epub tested with any2epub every third or fourth page has a paragraph that is underlined.

There is no separate epub2epub (just pass an epub to any2epub)

Looks like I forgot to commit the metadata changes to 0.4.90...will be in next release.
