On the "Look and Feel" page, there is a tab titled "Filter Style Information." Click on it. Now look for Fonts. Make sure that box is NOT checked.

Thanks Booklover! I bet that's it. I'll check when I get home tonight. I had that checked by default when I was converting to ePubs for my Sony. Never thought to uncheck it before trying to convert to azw with an embedded font!

Karma to you.

You do not need to install any fonts in Windows. Calibre can pick up the fonts as files outside of where fonts are installed in Windows. So no need if you don't want them installed.

Just create a directory, place the fonts in and you can select these fonts for Calibre to embed.

If I do a tweak book and explode the azw3 from the original conversion there's nothing in the fonts directory. I'll check on the Calibre forum for any known issues with font embedding.

Cheers
It could be that the ePub has font-family references in the CSS. Load it back into Sigil and check the CSS file. If it does, remove them and save. Then try the conversion with embedding and see how it goes.

One way to solve the bloat problem is to also select to subset the fonts. That way, any font not used will not be embedded and the fonts used will be reduced to just the characters in the book.

It seems when the source book already has a font embedded in it, the calibre method does not work. The embedded font will supersede the font you add. Any way around this other than to manually edit the book and remove the font?

Install the Modify EPUB plugin, if it's an EPUB. It has the option to remove embedded fonts.

On embedding fonts one need to erase all font-family references in source file. To this end, go to Look&Feel, find tab Filter Style Information and enter text "font-family" (without quotation marks) into the field Other CSS properties.
Erasing font-family references will provide proper display of embedded font when Publisher Font is selected.
I never use Calibre GUI, just issue command ebook-convert with parameter --filter-css font-family.

I'm surprised you can't install custom fonts on the PW2. Having to embed them in the ebook is not progress. Duh, Amazon.

There are no font-family references in the source epub (including the css). I've checked and double-checked. What's odd is that if I change the file even a little bit it seems to fix the problem. I suspect there's some incorrect code somewhere that Sigil is auto-fixing and it's this that Calibre's getting confused by.

Can I ask a few questions please?

Is there a tutorial anywhere that tells how to embed fonts using Calibre?

Also I tried embedding one using 'look and feel' but when I loaded it onto my Kindle I didn't see the option to select 'Publisher Font', was that because I hadn't removed the Fonts hack yet? I was testing it on a PW1, my PW2 arrives next week.

I only read DRM free mobi's so converting through Calibre is what I do. I rarely read anything bought from Amazon. This is all new to me but I did like my own font.

Thanks Jo

What format were you converting to? Mobi doesn't support embedded fonts - only KF8 (which Calibre calls "AZW3") does.

I'm only using mobi, I have never tried converting to KF8. I assume I just select that as the output as I normally use do Mobi?

Correct. Choose "AZW3" as the output format.
