No, the basic Kindle doesn't have the magnetic sleep/wake facility that the PW does. That was introduced with the PW.

I'm one of those people who also love the baby Kindle because of its great screen with great blacks. The lighted cover has some issues, but it is still very useful. Hard to say if it is worth the asking price, probably not. It is not a perfect cover by any means either, but it has been the best I've come across.

I've had some issues (http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,129956.0.html), but also found a fix (http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,131020.0.html) with the light. I just posted some pics of the case and a few different colors online if you want to take a look, I will late put online the olive green one too: http://www.kboards.com/index.php/topic,164293.0.html

Personally I've tried some other covers, but always returned to the official baby Kindle lighted cover for myself and the family. In the end, it is still probably one of the best lighted covers for this generation and if you get along with the light, it has excellent usability and good offers protection.

Thanks Harry for clearing up the cover doesn't wake up the K4NT, I was afraid of that. Oh well.

Thanks Fearindex for all of the links, I am studying it now. I figured there might be glare. With all of my reading lights I use to attach I had problems with drooping and adjusting every time and of course, glare. I put masking tape over the light lens itself because it was too bright.

It looks like the $64 (with tax) cover is the best, mine will be here tomorrow. The price is huge, but I have tried other covers for my other Kindles and always returned to the Amazon expensive covers, they are the best. Too expensive, but makes reading more enjoyable. As long as the light actually covers the Kindle I will keep it.

Adding the lighted cover really adds to the bulk. I too like the buttons on the K4 but IMO with the lighter cover I think the PW becomes the nicer device.

Niceness of course is a matter of opinion. With the lighted cover baby Kindle is still a little lighter, though, if comparing official covers.

Here are the weights as measured by me today:

$69 Kindle 4B/5 naked: 168 g
$69 Kindle 4B/5 with official lighted cover: 313 g
PaperWhite 1 3G: 220 g
PaperWhite 1 3G with official case: 355 g

PaperWhite 2 is 6 grams lighter than PW1 and 3G looses 9 grams according to specs, so PW2 Wi-Fi with official case: 340 g

I bought the Basic Kindle because I am older than some of the rocks in the street--it's a cobblestone street--and was leery of the touch screen. But, the idea of the lighted screen was irresistible so I tried a Paperwhite. I promptly gave my Basic Kindle to a friend's daughter who is in college in the U.S.

I'm wondering if the lighted screen was enough of a success to prevent any more unlighted screens from being made for Kindle. As for the Touch screen, I can use it but I don't mind buttons, either. I find I have fewer "errors" with the touch screen.

I actually have more "errors" with the touch screen. I got tired of the page not turning and rereading the same page, duh, before realizing the touch was not responding.

Thus, I am going back to the K4NT (even though it is new to me) and have more control over page turns, they are faster too.

I imaging I will switch back between the PW and K4NT, I read 2 books at the same time anyway alot.

Good to know.

You want heavy hold the KFHD with official cover, and the Kindle DX with official cover. I lean any of them on a pillow when I read in bed anyway, the weight is not as important too me as ease of use and viewability or readability (are these even words?).

I am trying to find Gaffers tape or black cardboard for when the lighted cover gets here, as I know I will need it.

It's funny when I started reading on my K4B again last month I kept turning the page by accident. I am so not use to page buttons and prefer a touch screen.

The K4B would be perfect if they gave us the time to read feature!

I have a Eco-flip cover that I love to pieces on my K4B.

To get to Lending Library on K4:

. Home screen
. Press Options button on left of Home button
. Select "Shop in Kindle Store"
. Top of screen under "Browse" "Books"
-- select "See all Categories"
. Small menu screen will pop up and last selection is "Kindle Owners' Lending Library"

There are 420,161 titles!

At the top right of the Lending Library screen then you can select
" View Subcategories within Owner's Lending Library"

It's great that you like you K4!

Hehehe! I was also accidently turning pages forward and backward on the K4 after I traded in my PW1 and was waiting for the PW2. Also, I kept pressing the top of the screen to go Home.

I also like my Eco-flip which I had bought after your review, except the power button is harder to find, the case needs to be a tad shorter.

Thanks! That is a lot of steps. I always end up wasting my monthly book on a dud. I wish Amazon let you pick it out on the computer I would have an easier time.

Pick it out on the PC then type in the name of the book on the K4. That's what I do. Any Kindle book that says Prime by it is lendable.

That was me too! Give me a touch screen over buttons any day.

They discontinue the case. It's one of the best designed cases and they get rid of it! I know why they did because of the sleep function on the Paperwhite but still Amazon still sells the Kindle Basic.
