Aura HD because that's the one I own and I have no interest in a Kindle.

The Kobo Aura HD features a 6.8 inch touchscreen with a resolution of 1440×1080 with 265 DPI. AuraHD has a higher resolution and the same 1000mhz for its CPU. It has 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal uSD system drive and an external uSD drive up to 32GB.

You can have four ereading programs running on the AuraHD, at this point in time. Two of them are from Kobo and two others (CoolReader and KoReader) can be easily added by the user. All four coexist and launch from the same home screen.

I know little about the PW2 but it should also be able to run KoReader.

So for me, assuming someone could get past my two large dogs and my own gun, I would choose my AuraHD.

I guess, both of those are marginally better choice than getting shot ;-)

Seriously. I do not like Kobo and I do not like Kindle. I would choose Kobo. I did have PaperWhite 1 and sold it with a loss to purchase much more expensive PocketBook 623 Touch Lux.

The only reason for my dislike is the software, necessity of registration of the device and limited possibility of configuration.
Regarding configuration, Kobo Aura HD seems to have more possibilities. But ... (I am not helping, am I?

) some people report firmware glitches on their Kobos.

Ufff ... no bullet this time ... I chose Kobo Aura HD

I'd try to talk him into a Kobo Glo as it's cheaper, but if not, I'd go with the Aura HD.

Thanks everyone for all the replies.. OK.. I'll put the Gun down now.. I think I will buy both and compare them side by side.. at least I didn't shoot anyone.. I have to tell you though, it kinda looks like the KPW2 is the ticket.. but I will let you know my Rookie opinion after the comparisons..

That's an easy one: I'd choose any Kobo over any Kindle. Being able to access public library books is important to me, which automatically removes Kindle from the running.

I get lots of library books on my Kindle? Perhaps this is a non-US issue?

If I remember correctly, the US is the only place where library borrowing is possible on the Kindle.

To answer OPs question, it's the Aura HD because of its beautiful lighting and high resolution screen. Really don't like the Kindle UI.

Come on now, we are talking Kindle vs. Kobo. The decision ought to be easy.

That said, if the question was about two ePub based ereaders, I'd be in the same coffin as you. (Erm, boat.)

The Aura HD. I already have a PW1 and so far I've not been impressed by the 2. I like the idea of the larger screen/increased resolution on the Aura HD. I only wish it had all the features of the Aura. If I didn't have a PaperWhite I'd get the pw2 over the Aura HD as I prefer kindles in general. I'll probably pick up one of these 2 devices at some point though.

I have a kindle fire and borrow library books using the overdrive app i am a member of a few libraries and have no problems borrowing from them. I am in the UK
